May 13 (Saturday ) - back in the fold

Rockwell 6s on plate #4 / PAL Gold Thin Hollow Ground carbon ( 9)
    Kent woodhandled boar brush
Red Green Duct Tape Special frankensoap
Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Astringent Aftershave

After yesterday's horrifying excursion into the world of science run amok -- electrified dry shavers! Who deliberately sets out to create such monstrosities? -- today was a peaceful return to the calm, rational sanity that normally prevails around here.

Everything worked well and the result was a good close shave that left me feeling clean, refreshed and just a bit pampered.

One thing I am changing is that I am going to drop the Rockwell 6s back down to plate #3 again. That seems to hit a sweet spot for me between a close, efficient shave and lack of irritation that plate #4 just edges past again.

Hope the weekend goes well for everybody.

I love the shave I get from my Rolls. Andrew, you aren't a straight shaver are you? If that blade hasn't been tuned up, it will need to be honed to get it back into shape where the Rolls system can maintain it. I honestly get a better shave from a well honed Rolls razor than my straights. If you or someone else hones it on a progression of stones, put one layer of tape on the spine. This will give you the same angle as the kit uses. Once it is honed, it is easy to maintain.

I'm not sure I like "de-whiskered" as a replacement for "shaved". I'll bet people who begin saying that realize immediately how silly it sounds and say "the heck with new-wave, there simply is no replacement for "shave/shaving".

Hallway Shaving Update: This morning, I was able to do a complete shave IN THE BATHROOM-the lights didn't flicker! The socket still doesn't sound normal, so I think I'll reduce light usage to shaving only, until the landlord gets here.

When I finally get all my DEs cleared out, my Staley head is one that will be kept. I got mine in a trade with a non working handle. Put it on a longer stainless handle. I find the shave mild but efficient. Put a feather or Rapira in there and it is a great shave. Best part, you can find a non working one for $10-20 bucks, and a working one for around $30. Highly recommend trying one.

I said that as a joke, but its kind of funny now. I recommend you get the blade touched up, then do a focus, with no training wheels. Unless you have a job where it could hit your livelihood, just jump in. What's the worst that could happen?

Another pain stick shave, and another one pass with good results. I ended with a CCS, but my baby was waking up, so I decided to call it quits. The past two shaves with this razor have been extremely easy. I think I am regaining some form after having been away from Shavettes/Straights for so long. I hope everyone has a great Saturday!

Disappointing; now what are we going to do to entertain ourselves, Paul?

I'm going to need some time to focus before doing this focus, Adam. Too many soaps, creams and DE razors to try at the moment. In the meantime, I'd offer out a similar "What's the worst that could happen?" challenge, as I keep thinking about the sharpened lawnmower blade shave idea, but don't have the open blade experience, honing skills, or special brand of crazy to pull it off. For some reason (I don't know why) your name keeps coming to mind as having this special skillset. Additionally, it would be an automatic nomination several categories, to include in your own category, as it would clearly be a new open blade for you. It might even allow you to take an awesome snapshot to become the first nominee in the "She's got the look" category. Think about it.

If you need any more ideas, just let me know. I'll be here all month.

Love this filtered effect. I'm planning on nominating one for a photo category if you'll submit what you think your favorite is on the Shavy thread. Regardless, keep 'em coming!

The Damaskeene OC from last weekend was such a pleasure to use that it is on the way to Nick at Sport Shaving for replating. Up for weekend duty is my Gem 1912. I have always had good results with this razor but I wanted to try it using the shim method I used last weekend with the Damaskeene. This turned out to be a very bad idea. The first 2 passes were uncharacteristically rough with several weepers. I removed the shim before the third pass and the smooth efficient razor had returned. I am thinking of having Delta Echo coat this razor so I will use it tomorrow without the shim to make help me decide. A splash of Myrsol Agua Balsamica and I am ready for the day. I hope everyone has a fantastic Saturday.

Likewise, you are another "shoe in" for the photo category, Clint. Again, submit your favorite to the shavy thread and we will make the nomination happen!

Thank you Doug. I only wish the shave was as good as the photo. The roughest shave of the year by a wide margin.
