What is your plan for MAYhem?

  1. Gonna get crazy with the group using less than fine Japanese shavettes!

Sounds like a Focus to me. Try your lather thick, thin, dry, or runny. Somewhere in the mix is the one that works for you.

May wrap up: I survived. I pushed the limits of my technique, common sense, and equipment this month. I did remind myself that technique trumps tools, and was able to get a good shave from most of the implements. The fact that I got an acceptable two pass shave from a razor blade in a binder clip was probably the highlight of my month. Watching everyone else have go about their normal shaving lives was fun, but seeing @wchnu and @mrchick bust into Mayhem like a cannon ball into an kiddie pool was awesome. I will say that I am looking forward to a non-eventful month in June, with SR shaves being on hold until my finger heals. I will spend a little time with Injectors, DEs, and the Goose. Remember to start getting ready for Cinco de Julio. Its only 36 days away.

One last semi-attempt at some MAYhem-light. One more nice, safe shave result with an odd instrument. Apparently I have learned enough in this happy little group to shave successfully with a variety of tools (and to avoid others and to check reflections in my pictures). I like this odd little Shavette enough to keep it in rotation.

    MAYhem finale!

    ColConk Lime & Cremo Cooling
    Omega Pro #98 boar brush
    Unnamed Half DE shavette
    '55 Red Tip Gillette DE - A4
    1&1/2 Personna Med Prep blades
    Alum, Pinaud Citrus Musk AS

On the suggestion by @LevelupShaves, I tried a minty lime SuperLather. Moistened and loaded Col Conk Lime with the boar brush, added a shot of Cremo Cooling to the suribachi bowl.

Both the soaps will lather, together they do well.

The menthol of the Cremo overpowered the lime scent, but it did make a slick lather.
Today's mail contained a bit of hardware from Andrew @Linuxguile to help me close out the month. Broke a blade in half and loaded easily taking precautions. Sorry no mishaps. Knowing my shavette skill level I took a N to S all over pass, E to W above chin line, and S to N on my neck. Good reduction & no blood! Gave the Red Tip clean up duty to a great DFS beard reduction. Alum barely spoke, and the Pinaud gave a satisfying alcohol burn.
I started the month planning on more shavette action than I actually performed. This shiny new*to*me blade holder has a good weight to it. I think it'll get used often!
    Good Shaves Y'all!

Remember, Mayhem is almost done, so there's not much time left to propose nominations for the Shaveys!

This pic is worthy of a Shavey nomination. Congrats @SharptoothC on two nominations in one afternoon. Way to beat the buzzer!

Same soap I used and reviewed today. Interested in your take, since I used a very different technique and am curious if the soap itself was more responsible for my results or if the prep & lather technique was mostly responsible.

First of all I don't read instructions. I always soak my brushes for 5 minutes in warm water in an Old Spice coffee mug before working up a lather. It took me more than 40 seconds to get a good lather. I found this soap very easy to lather and also the same results as you as far as the scent was concerned it was nice and fragrant. I think we are pretty much on the same page. I find it usually takes me a few shaves to get a better understanding of a soap. Thanks for your review.

What blew me away is they said to load the soap for 40 seconds or swirls - i forget which, but either one is way more than I do - and then face lather (which I don't usually do). If you were using your regular technique, did you find it noticeably denser than other good quality soaps using that same technique?

I don't think I found it thicker than some of my favorite soaps. I was using a new bowl so that might have something to do with it.

Were the scissors tactically mounted on the M14 or did you hold them separately in your other hand? :)

If it's worth doing, it's worth doing well? Although @Drygulch and @wchnu seem to take 'well' to mean 'even if it's badly, do it badly well'.

As I lather on the puck, 40 seconds is usually a bit short. Especially for Williams :)
