I usually keep hickory, pecan, apple, and cherry on hand. I agree that mesquite is a bit harsh for the type of BBQ I do.
So my focus for the month was improving my lack of honing skills. I was able to hone my razor and get a pretty good shave. Now I do not want to take the razor back to the stones just for the sake of honing. So I have a new toy, I mean razor. I found this at an antique shop. I couldn't help myself. It kept calling out to me "Buy Me. Buy Me." I have never used an injectable razor. So with the permission of the group I would like to take the rest of this month to learn how to shave with an Injectable.
I find that the type of hardwood I use for smoking depends significantly on what meat I am using. For example pork and chicken (lighter meats) do better with lighter woods like Applewood or pecan, whereas beef can handle stronger smelling hardwood like Mesquite. Hickory tends to bridge the gap between the two. Bottom line, it depends on how much you want the wood to flavor of the meat, and if the meat is hearty enough to stand up against a more pungent wood.
All Rules/Foci are self directed and depend on the individuals desire to improve their shaves. I understand the issues about honing your own up to the point of not diving down the hone stone rabbit hole. Now injectors? You have my encouragement to jump in! I was in DE acquisition disorder when I passed up several vintage Schicks. Opportunity lost, but I've since learned the error of my ways. Blades called "Chicks" (Chinese Schicks) can be ordered online. They are thicker than a DE & give more shaves than the thinner steel.
That Frederick Reynolds wedge I bought has a pretty good smile to it. I touched it up a bit, and it worked out great, but I would like to find a crappy old one to practice on before I try to do any real work on one I care about. I was pretty nervous just barely hitting it with a finisher. You have probably seen it already, but I watched this series of videos from GSSixgun a few times.
I used to use a lot of red oak, which tastes very nearly like hickory, and I can get it anywhere. I used that a lot more when I used a horizontal wood pit. A few years ago I started smoking mainly in a Weber Smokey Mountain, burning charcoal in the Minion method. That style of fire uses such a small amount of wood in a cook that I have been playing around with buying different types of wood. I do know that I have never cared much for mesquite. It is too harsh of a smoke for my tastes.
I recently picked up Mystic Water Oakmoss and Vetiver and Brown Windsor in a lot of soap I received. Both those scents aren't that appealing to me. I'll probably sell or trade them at some point. However, there is an Irish Traveller from the soap pass-around box that smells really nice. I'll try it soon. I've never tried any Mystic Water soaps.
I plan on giving MW Barbershop, Sardinian Honey and Bay Rum a try at some point. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
No shave for me today. Cut the grass and was doing some weed-eating and the weed-eater malfunctioned. So I called it quits for the day. Need to buy a little part to get the weed-eater up and going again. Anyway, I'll be back and shaving tomorrow, most likely with a Schick E2 to mow down this two days growth. Glad @Bama Samurai is back in the States. Must be a wild experience to have been in London when all of that was happening. It's really a terrible deal and I feel for the victims and their families.
Razor: Portland Razor Co Chimera Strop: Drygulch 45 Brush Handle: B-400 The Brush by Tom Knot: APShaveCo Tuxedo Soap: Tcheon Fung Sing Ginestra di Taormina Post Care: Thayers Witch Hazel Alum Osage Rub Aftershave: Chatillon Lux Forth and Pine Excellent shave this morning. It was my first time using a TFS soap and I was impressed. It lathered so easily, had a great scent and was very slick. I really enjoyed this soap. Three passes with the Chimera and I ended up with a DFS. The Chatillon Lux aftershave complimented the soap and left my face feeling refreshed and hydrated. I shaved 9 hours ago and can still smell the AS. Have a great day folks!
That's why I picked up the injector. I found the blades at a local drug store. Sent from my phone using some app

I have a family friend who moved to London many years ago, and after watching what happened, I said right to the TV screen "Get out of there, Lyle!!"(I'll call him Lyle because that is his name).
