How old were you when you started shaving?

When I was 12, my father gave me one of the first electric Norelco razors and told me I needed to go shave. I had a face full of what was to heavy to be peach fuzz(as we called it), but not quite whiskers. I used that old Norelco until I was about 16 or17. At first about once a month, then a couple years down the road once a week. Finally when I got either 16 or 17 I couldn't get clean look' n no matter how hard I pushed or how long I spent try'n . I went to the store and bought a pack of disposable Bic razors and a can of edge gel. I went to my father and said, I don't know how to use these. He said- " go with the grain."
Now my youngest is 12. He's not there yet, but I'm looking forward to getting him started off right!

How old were you and what's your story?

 

I can't recall how old I was when I started. I can tell you my youngest started at 15, but doesn't really need to shave more than once a week.

I was 13 and got an electric razor from my mom. My parents divorced the year before so my dad wasn't really around to teach me how to shave. It wasn't even on my radar tbh, so my grandfather stepped in and showed me some basics. Go in a circle etc. I only shaved my upper lip for the longest time because that was the only place where I was growing hair but after a few years I started to grow on my cheeks. Three years later I traveled to Berlin by myself to visit some friends and forgot my razor. One of my friend's boyfriends taught me how to shave with a cartridge razor in Berlin and after that I just stuck with it, especially after getting a Mach 3 in the mail for my 18th birthday. I used that one Mach 3 though for at least 2 months at a time. Kind of ridiculous haha. It wasn't until I stepped into the Art of Shaving store in Northpark Mall in Dallas that I saw safety razors and had to have one. That was 5 years ago.

 

Did you happen to step into the Godiva next door afterwards? I would have....

Because of what my father said I only shaved with the grain until I was 19. Then, again, I couldn't get clean look'n, so I bought a Mach 3( They were the brand new thing.) And out of desperation tried shaving sideways( as I called it). aka XTG , and was able to look presentable again. I really never could shave ATG with a cartridge.

 

I think I was about fifteen or so when I started shaving. Patchy all over my face. Started with BiC single disposable and a can of Barbasol. Upgraded to twin blades then to cartridge. About twenty I started shaving my head and until about three years ago or so I went down the path of DE shaving and haven't went back to that stuff ever again.

Started shaving at 16. And got onto DE about 18 and a bit as I was so sick and tired of all the irritation for not even a close shave! Saw a video by Geo Fatboy come up, which got me my first DE (Parker 99R clone) and now 20 and absolutely obsessed

I watched a ton of geofatboy, learning how to use a DE. I started trying to save money like alota folks and then I figured out that wetshaving(DE, SE, etc.) is its own thing and down the rabbit hole I went

 

Exactly now I'm spending more money than ever but couldn't be happier. It's a very rare hobby for someone my age to have but I'm proud of it

I still manage to claim a savings, because I shave my head so I'm not paying for haircuts. That and I'm a pretty frugal buyer. BUT, I am starting to want to try straights...We'll see how long the savings last

Hey you like what you like! Some of the coolest people I know have unusual hobbies

 

Oh wow. I've tried shavettes. That's about as far as I'll go I think DE still makes me very happy, I've been buying a lot of artisan products and realising it's so much cheaper and just as good to stick with the big brands. Cheap products have never been so good!

I really like shavettes, I'm still learning them, but I'm getting great results and I enjoy the technique required.
For me ,even if I pay $20+ for , especially a soap, and even creams, it lasts so long I'm still ahead because the blades are so much cheaper. I never could get more than 2 or 3 at most, uses from a cartridge. My wife remembers how fast I went through them, which helps when I buy something new

 

I was 13 or 14. I tried my dad's electric razor, and never could get a good shave from it. My dad got me some disposables and Barbasol and showed me the ropes. I didn't shave regularly until I turned 15 and got my first "real" job (because mowing lawns for spending money and cookies was apparently not, though lucrative for an 11-14 year old's needs, a real job). Showed up the first day with some facial hair and the manager gave me a disposable blade and made me shave in the bathroom sink with hand soap. Barbasol and I had a meeting every day for years until I left that job.

I bet you did. I had to shave in a public bathroom with hand soap once and once was enough for me too!

 

Straights are easierto use then shavettes you know...


I do not remember the whole story at about 14 my mom got tired of me always looking like I had a dirty face. I remember she was the one that made me shave. I know there was a lady gillette and a black beauty in tbe medicine cabinet. Also some kind of cart. I used them all. I still have those razors. I used a cart with a mug and brush a lot off and on. Taught myself to use a straight around 2000 by reading a few articals. No you tube. I used carts mixed with DE off and on and some straight.I have not used a cart since about 2007.

 

Yep I've definitely heard this. I just don't have the money for straights and honing, stropping

Indeed I said that about premium priced razors. Now I have two ATT and a feather ASD2 which is my absolute favourite
