My mother-in-law travels to Germany each summer. Last year she brought me some Speick cream and aftershave back. I love both of those. Her location is in Bavaria, Keifersfelden to be precise, which is very close to the Austrian border. I went about four years ago but wasn't into wet shaving then and didn't know the great supplies I missed out on.

I have seen a few TSDenizens in Germany recently and know we have some European members, so.....

What should I have her look for and bring back for me this year???

It can't be expensive or hard to find. What are some items in the grocery or drug stores that are worthy of owning? I'm thinking soaps or creams and aftershave splashes.

I've already tried Tabac and wasn't fond of it. :scared003: As I mentioned I love Speick but already have the set.

    Let me know your opinions!

I want to try De Vergulde Hand. I am told it means Gilded Hand and is one of the oldest and finest shaving soaps in the world. It wouldn't still be around if it wasn't as good as gold. It has a classic soap scent, subtle and clean.

    1. Palmolive stick
    2. Tabac
    3. Speick
    4. Kabinett

The best commercial German soaps, in my honest opinion and they're reasonably-priced.

I've got a Palmolive stick and have tried Speick and Tabac. But Kabinett is a great suggestion. Thanks!

Would this soap still be available in Germany?

This thread is making me face palm myself. Last time I was in Germany I was consumed with drinking beer, eating croissants, sausages, and streudel.

Never once thought about German steel and Shaving.

I'd be willing to half a dusy block. It's always been too much soap for me alone, and shipping made it too expensive.

Absolutely. I was using Mach 3 and Cremo back then. Knew nothing about brushes and soaps, etc. Had some of the best beer and food though. Great place to visit.

You can probably find Wilkinson Sword shave stick, Palmolive and Welda shave creams, maybe some aftershaves like Pitralon at drugstores like Müller or Kauflan.
I don't think they carry Dusy at common drug stores you have to look in the German equivalent to a beauty supply shop.

Perhaps, but I'm not sure. I know some stores in Belgium carry it.

Klar and Gold Dachs are good scents and are at the Manufactum and Mußler stores. Not super expensive and likely to find them on sale. Most of the other soaps, splashes, creams mentioned in the thread can be found almost anywhere but definitely at the dm stores The dm store I went to seemed to mostly carry tubes of creams and not soaps. Pils (soap puck and stick) is another brand. Not much of a scent, but it is a light clean scent.

Since she is close to the Austrian border she might be able to find Haslinger and Knize Ten.

Gold Dachs Spezial is excellent and there's another one called Dr Dittmar. I heard a lot of complaints about the Pils sticks from some guys at the German gut rasiert.de forum where I'm very active. In fact a good friend of mine said it's the worst soap he ever used in his life.

Nope. Not even close to the Dutch border. No chance in Bavaria.

Jim, this is a Dutch product, tho the translation is correct.* I had some a while back thanks to our friend @macaronus and it was a great performer. However, after a bit, my skin reacted rather unplesantly to something in it. :(

*hmmm.... looks like Jeff beat me to it.

Ah, the Extra Fris version of VGH. I only used the original one and it's a bit on the drying side but it didn't give my skin any irritation.
