This morning I decided to break in the 30DC LE brush fitted with the Razorock Sinthetic Silvertip. Wow, is this thing great! Not only does it look great, it's performance and comfort in the hand is outstanding. I absolutely love this thing, Jason
@jtspartan! (Also, shout out to Rick
@RyX for the cypress, which makes it extra special for me.) Anyway, I went back to the TOBS St. James this morning and decided to try out my Fatboy again, to initiate some learning.
Follow along, there is a question here at the end, for those of you more learned in the ways of the razor than me.
Although my slim is my "go to" razor, I've now shaved with enough of a variety of razors to be confident with most of them, and usually found that I can get dialed in reasonably quickly and get a good shave from most of them. The exception has been my Fatboy. It still produces a DFS+, but is what I would consider a "rough" shave. The net result is fine, but the blade is always very uncomfortable on my face, regardless of the angle I use. Until I learned something today that made me question if something is off with the razor. When I first tried the Fatboy a few weeks ago, I set it at a 4, where I like my Slim dialed in at the moment. Rough shave. I heard that the Fatboy can shave more aggressively than the Slim, so I dialed it back to 3. Still rough shave. Today I dialed it back to 2. Horribly rough shave for the first two passes. I then looked at the side of the razor and realized that there was virtually no curve (i.e. tension) on the blade at all, so I dialed it up to 5. Suddenly it smoothed out and became comfortable. Apparently, I couldn't get the blade angle shallow enough until I dialed it to a more aggressive setting, so the blade was basically just scraping my face.
So my question is "Is there this much variation between razors that the above is normal and to be expected, or is there something potentially that is "off" with this Fatboy?" I can just dial it up aggressively and call it a day, but it's making me wonder if there is potentially more to address here. I've considered sending it off to Delta Echo for a fancy paint job, and part of me wonders if its worth it just to have it checked out. Part of me wonders if its a waste of money if something truly is "off" about the razor. Thoughts?
