Thanks, Andrew. I had to look this up to find out what it was...I guess it has been a few years since mine were in diapers. Didn't look for the video.

I agree. Shavettes are far and away more practical for me.

We'll today's shave was about learning the dark ways again. I've taken off work for a bit to spend time with the wife and kids at the beach, giving me the luxury of not having to be well shaven for the moment. I also figured salt water would help heal any wounds that may occur.
    1. I used the razor @Drygulch sent me. It was much sharper than the Dovo I received. I think the Dovo may not have been Shave ready, which may explain why it was sold to me after only 2 uses from its previous owner.
    2. With a sharper blade, I was able to do a 3 pass shave with the straight on my entire face and neck (more or less) - WTG, XTG, ATG. I created 3 weepers - one on the neck and one on each side of the moustache area. I also left some patchy areas that required a fourth pass using my Slim to try and clean up things. It was less than a DFS, but again 3 passes and no cuts for my third shave with a straight is slow, steady improvement.
    3. Using the slim for the fourth pass felt so smooth in comparison to the straight that it was like putting balm on my face. So much so, in fact, that it makes me wonder why I'm using this straight blade when the DE's are giving me such a smooth close shave now. I'm guessing just the desire to conquer it is driving me at the moment, but it is far from an enjoyable experience yet.
    4. My next shave will be with a DE, just for pure enjoyment. Then we'll SE what the weekend holds.

Any thoughts, suggestions, heckling, etc. from the dark siders? I know I'm learning, but the irritation and inferior shave results don't exactly spur me on at the moment...

I am going to keep and maintain and use the one I own as I do enjoy it, but that's as deep as that rabbit hole goes until I have more money and time.

Sounds like your doing great. Remember to hold on to the tail!!! The other end has teeth! Straight or shavettes and a Se or Injector and you will forget your DE stuff...just saying!

Just keep it at. I know for a fact that Torrey was only about a 8.5 out of 10 for sharpness. (I am not a honemiester.) If it is a lot better than the Dovo, send the Dovo out to have it honed. You will have a much easier time with the razor if you have a sharp one. Two big items that helped me. 1) Skin Stretching. Rub wet fingers on an alum block, so you can grip soapy skin. Pull it away from the way you are shaving. I use long strokes on the cheeks and neck, but short 1/2 inch strokes on the chin and jaw, with lots of very deliberate skin stretching. 2) Blade angle. you want the blade to be 1 to 2 spine widths from your face. To me this was way easier to visualize than 20-30 degrees.

Yesterday's shave was lime flavored. Used my injector with the vintage blade, my Shavey award soap, brush, and preshave oil. I was pretty impressed with the Razorrock soap. This jar had a sticker with a date on the lid that shows it to be 4 years old. I am going to try and use it up soon. I also managed to hit the end of my soap rotation. I currently have 26 jars of open soap. Going to use up the B&M samples I got on my last order, then back to the rotation. The brush is a beast. I have discovered that I like my Omega boar brushes, but don't like other brands of boar. Not sure why that is, but this one feels like my 10066, just bigger. Its a soap eating monster. It will be installed in the 30DCLE brush that shipped today. Happy Thursday, everyone!

Looked this up too... love the website name- buttpaste.com (is it the weekend, yet?)
Shocking that Preparation H didn't patent the domain name first.
The slogan isn't too shabby either- 'lets kick some rash'

I like what you did with the SE in your #4.

For me, the best way I learned straights was to fully commit. I tried doing it on the weekends only, and that didn't work. I finally decided to go all in and do every shave with a straight. That's when I got decent. I was able to get a one pass DFS most days. If I give up my morning workouts at some point, I'll probably go back to straights, as I do enjoy the shave.

Follow Adam's advice as well. I learned a lot for following his progress and his advice when I started.

DE can still have a place! I like mixing it up.

Just keep at it. It can only get better. I have to agree with almost everything Adam said. I don't know about his skills at honing, so that is the only thing I can't agree with.
I do know that trying to keep the spine 1-2 spine widths from my skin made a BIG difference in my shave.
Practice is the only thing that will make it better. Any shave that doesn't end with stitches is a win in my book.

    Enjoy the Shave.
