Trials and Tribulations - 30 DC LE Brush inaugural shave!

    June 26

Razor - Delta Echo New LC
    Blade - [IMG] (1)
    Soap - Truefitt & Hill 1805
    Brush - 30 DC LE
    Post - Alum

I received my 30 DC LE brush in the mail today from @jtspartan and huge thanks go out to him for the idea and execution of some very fine shaving brushes! It's a gorgeous brush and I'm proud to be a part of this fine group that now has its own unique and limited edition brush. Excellent work. Also, a huge shout out and thanks to whichever of the elves on here paid for my brush. The generosity of this group and the spirit of brotherhood on here makes this a very special place on the web indeed. No place like it that I know. That goes for the Shave Den as a whole, and an extra measure of that for the 30DC.

In honor of this fine brush I decided to do an all gift shave again, using the brush, my Delta Echo New LC raffle win, and the Truefitt & Hill 1805 soap. I figured the Tuxedo knot could use some British class to break it in as well.

I have learned that synthetic knots are great face latherers and seem to load so much faster than any other brush. This one is no exception. A bit more backbone than the WCS brush and even more than the Maggard knot in the JR46, but it feels great and produced lather in no time. I let the New and the best Russian steel on the planet give the lather a workout and it had no issues at all. Slick and nice and the scent is really nice. My wife loves it as well so that helps.

Two passes and a touch up and the baby is in the house. One of those shaves that reminds you why this is so much fun and satisfying all at once. A further comment on the brush - I love the feel of the handle. It has good length without being too long. Again, nicely done. Between this brush and the Jayaruh #46 I am going to be extremely spoiled.

I had an excellent shave just before with the Palmolive Menthol cream which I bowl-lathered, yes, bowl-lathered in the empty Glacial Lemon Chill container which I kept for that purpose. Just a little cream was needed and after about 30-40 seconds the lather was fantastic. The menthol chill felt great and the post-shave care was moisturizing and very soothing, so this cream will always have a spot in my rotation. The Fougere Santal aftershave from Reef Point was a gift from the love of my life and does it ever smell FANTASTIC - not only that, it's got a good menthol effect.

    Enjoy your day, guys!

Since I've commented extensively as to how pleased I am with Tallow + Steel's new soap formula, I'll just briefly convey my thoughts on Maya's fragrance.

Cocoa and coffee arrive at the same time, but they fall short of dominating the fragrance which is soon mitigated by the rich, spicy notes presumably offered up by the allspice. These intermingle with the cocoa and coffee on an almost sinister scale. By themselves, these notes wouldn't typically be described as dark, but the accord is indeed dark but clean and crisp. There is zero cooling effect, but it smells like there should be. A gentle minty metallic fragrance is detected. I was initially inclined to call it anise, but it doesn't quite make that leap. The sharp lime along with a bitter citrus keep the fragrance from being sweet. As the shave progresses, the coffee becomes more discrete giving way to cocoa. I do note a hint of tobacco, but it's quite subtle and intermittent.

The splash starts like most Tallow + Steel splashes with a transient creaminess that I assume is from the base ingredients. With the exception of the still light tobacco, the other notes of coffee, cocoa, and cardamom are more clearly defined with equal showing from whatever the effervescent fragrance is. The drydown reveals even more of the lime and bitter orange. This fragrance seems to last longer than the other new Tallow + Steel splashes I've used thus far (Himalaya and Morocco), still detectable 6 hours out.

For me, Maya pretty much fills the void left by Dark's departure. While it's hardly the same fragrance, it fits in that category.
