That is the price of a combination set....whatever that is. The razor and blades in a velvet case is only $5. A bargin I am sure.

    I agree, in 2017 it's $1,320.00.

So my 1909 set is worth about 1300? Wooooo. Took some off for wear. Heck I'd take $800.

    Within two years. 1900.
I'm getting a reputation for Kampfe razor dating here. Strange, as I've never seen one in person.
Get yourself a copy of Waits' compendium... :D:D
(Get the PDF e-book. That way you can keep a copy on your phone. You never know when all that information might be useful.)

You are spot on! I gave it a good look over last night and the last patent date is January 14, 1900. Based on some material that @Billy Goatee kindly provided to me, I've identified this baby as a model HR-9A that was manufactured in 1900.

I'll take it out for a spin tomorrow morning. Very cool!

My example shows that I used the 50 dollar razor not 6.50. Also since you bring up the Model T that makes the 50 dollar razor seem even more ludicrous. A razor that is 1/17th the price of a car.

As I've mentioned previously, Wednesday was my 56th birthday. So, imagine my surprise yesterday when I found this in my mailbox:
Opening the box reveals a razor
    [IMG]
As well as some coupons and propaganda (note the slogan)

Of course, the question is- Do I use it or keep it in the package? :)

Ahhh. I was looking at the common ones, which was 6.50. Even in (especially in) 1907, rhodium wasn't cheap. Dropping the equivalent (now) of $1300 on a razor is JUST like those folks that buy the .. forgot the name. Ludicrously expensive DE maker in California. Not Wolfman (that's Canada), and not Bullgoose. It's unlikely that Gillette had the sets sitting around; they were almost certainly special order.

{Edit} I know plenty of people that drop $1300 on a TV, and that's easily 1/17th of a new car.

Just wanted to share a bit more from the Fusion propaganda...

First the tagline: "It may not be your first razor but it'll be your first real one"

"Your first shave won't make you a man, but your first real shave will get you pretty damn close."

"You didn't claw your way into manhood only to shave with a toy".

Oh... burn! Someone needs to point out to their marketing people that they called their old products "toys", which contradicts all of their earlier marketing materials - the finest shaving tools :)

Agreed. Also somewhat confusing is the fact that while Gillette sent me a ProShield razor, a section of the propaganda titled "Where Technology Meets Performance" shows a comparison chart between the ProShield, ProGlide, Fusion, and Mach3. So, are the others "real razors" or "toys"?

Also, I don't (usually) shave with a "toy". Rather, I use a Cold War-era precision shaving device whose manufacture, like that of a Saturn 5, employed techniques which have been all but lost to modern mass production.

Besides, I know my razors are "real". Most of them have had the "fur" (i.e., plating) rubbed off of them. :)

I agree about a TV, many would drop that amount pretty quick and never give it a second thought. Funny thing is a solid razor could last a couple lifetimes were a TV has almost become disposable 5-10 years max.

To be honest though even the 6.50 razors were expensive for their time. Sure some people or maybe many (on this board ) will pay over a hundred bucks for a razor but for the minority of the population thats a very high price to pay. Im sure I have that much invested total but I have a very hard time justifying that. Main reason I dont have a new in the box president/Aristocrat or diplomat
