I'm thinking that the $50.00 sets were the ornate gold plated and engraved ones like this.

There will always be buyers for this kind of stuff.

They have to try to appeal to new users somehow. I know I plan to give my son one of mine and will freely share with any of my friends that are curious.

My buddy that just started turning handles wants to put together a kit for his brother in law who started asking us questions so Im going to hook him up with a razor and hes going to make him a custom brush.

I have one like this, but this isn't mine. I'm not home, so I snagged the pic off of the Web.

I've got an OC, and wasn't too impressed with it. Haven't gotten a Clog-pruf yet.

Don't take the comment the wrong way. It's incredible, even if I hadn't taken up this hobby the engraving is impressive to say the least. Appreciating the time and skill needed to create such a piece has always been part of my personality.

You must remember this the first digital watch was LED and sold in 1972 for $2100 (more than the average car). In 1976 my uncle bought one for $350 (very basic). I remember my parents bought a house in 1968 for $2400; that was a 4 bedroom with a 90 foot long barn, a shop and a garage on 8 acres of land.

Prior to Gillette people primarily used straight razors, so this was new technology. As now as then people spend as for prestige; to say I have the latest and greatest gadget. :shocked029:

Needless to say I'm cheap. The digital watch I bought in 1981 was $28 can now be bought for ~$4.

I understand, I was merely saying I dont see it as being that accessible to the masses at those prices. Now for what its worth the price of Model T's fell to something like 350 bucks by 1925 so I would guess Gillette probably fell as well as automation improved making thier product more of a household name.

But when it fist came out it cost $850 in 1908. Only for the rich. The biggest thing that helped Gillette was WWI and their contract with the US government for razors for the dough boys. When they came home they were use to using Gillettes to be clean shaven for gas mask.

Save it and maybe people will become nostalgic about the Gillette fusion in 50 years. It could supplement your retirement income.

If I don't ever land some expensive classic like MDC or ABC I am quite happy with Stirling, WSP, and as of today, Mike's. Other recent acquisitions: Stirling's Executive Man with menthol, Ikon B1 Standard (I already had the Atlas handle), and the awesome Shavemac D01 28mm set in a LoveYourShave handle. That is a seriously dense and firm brush.

Yup, which is why they sold a lot of their $1.00 razors later.

I believe, however, that most people saw them as an investment. Rather than having a straight, which would require that they keep and maintain hones and strops, or pay for regular maintenance, this spread the cost out over a longer period, and reduced hassle.
