Been a busy last couple days here on the bayou. I had an undocumented shave as in; I did it, didn't take a photo, and don't recall what hardware or software I used. This is last nights set up that under normal circumstances would have been posted last night. TSD databases were glitching so I couldn't visit the site. Don't know what you got 'til it's gone.
The shave? Palmolive sample gave up it's second dose - it's in production, available from India, inexpensive. Also slick, lathers quick & easy, has decent residual glide. Smells good too, but I like Arko. I'm liking this Polsilver Super Iridium blade. It seems to have about reached the end of it's run. Still getting great lathers from the JR#130. (Jim @Jayaruh has an Adoption Drive going - some previously not availables are now!) I'm now rambling... Oh, the shave; Smooth, error free, into DFS zone. Alum was not too loud, and the Lime post care products continue to impress.

The brush handle is commissioned Art by Jim @Jayaruh. I like the classic professional barber profile handle shape. He did a fine job along the lines of an Omega Pro98, or a fluteless Rubberset 400. I'm not sure when Jim got his lathe, but he had it figured out when this handle was turned. No complaints about the synth knot - it works!

The razor has a special place in my den as it marks Tom @twhite's venture into straight razors. He & I swapped some gear. I sent a couple SRs, and received this DE with the case. The gold wash is shy on the cap as is common for a well loved example from 70 years ago. No plans to replate because the nickle under plating is doing fine.

 

I agree with you, Doug, that this is a great aftershave. The problem is finding it anywhere for less than a ransom price.

Myrsol Blue is very close substitute. Buying Myrsol from Gifts and Care is much more economical than most retailers.

 

I'm also a big fan of Barrister's Reserve Cool. Many seem to think it is quite close to Floid Blue. It was based on it, at least.

 

Thank you for the tip. I will keep that in mind when my Floid Blue is gone.

 

It is really satisfying to be getting some of my best shaves from a razor I honed myself. I just had one of my best four pass shaves ever

Gifts and Care is a fantastic shop. They have absolutely bent over backwards for me, and and on an order that probably cost them. Knew by the time they shipped to the states. I have bought several brushes from them, and their shipping costs are amazingly cheap.

 

Their prices on European soaps, creams, and aftershaves are great. Shipping costs is really pretty good when spread over several items.

A couple uses of the brush now, and it is definitely a winner. MIGHT knock the quarter out of the handle, and lower it 2mm, need to give it a couple more shaves. I have taken to setting my knots with a hot glue gun if I am not 100% sure I have it where I want it. I have never had one come loose on it's own, but they will pop out pretty easily if you want them to. It

I haven't been spending a ton of time on my honing focus, but I have picked up a couple of different finishers, and have been working on different things. I bought a Dan's Black Arkansas and have found that @Billyfergie speaks the truth: "This stone will expose the shortcomings of an inexperienced honer." I am finding this to be true. I have been having mixed results with it, but one thing I have found is that when finishing an edge that was done by a pro, I have ended up with some of the most crazy sharp AND smooth edges, but when finishing edges I honed from the bevel up, it has been about fifty/fifty. Even edges that I had previously finished on film and had great shaves, fell flat after I touched them up on the Arkansas. I think it just refines what is already there so much, and that maybe I have been trying to make chicken salad out of chicken manure?? It's good learning experience. I have two that are back in my little honing pile, and a couple that I'm pretty proud of.

 

Jared, the Joseph Rodgers razor is gorgeous.

Thanks. I'm not sure I've mastered it yet. One razor will shave beautifully. The next like a paint scraper. I'm making progress though. More often than not I'm having success. I'll get it figured out
