Only during the Masters. And even then, that's confined strictly to the area of town around the Augusta National.

Yes, I do. A leatherman and a very simple pocket-knife with a great blade:

Might I ask advice on a quality cheap knife? I have lost more pocket knives in my life it is embarrassing, so I hate spending a lot of money (same thing with pens - I now won't buy anything more expensive than the simple but reliable Parker Jotter). But I would like a nice one. Anybody recommend me something nice that can be had for under $20 (or if it is slightly over, that also would be okay). Preferably locally available, so not something obscure.

I always find myself wishing I had one.

    Spyderco Ladybug serrated. $40.00

I own one and like it a good sharp tool. Not the one I use the most but a good tool none the less.

The above knives are extremly compact and made of high quality materials, Titanium and VG-10, but only available through A.G Russell. I had the smaller of the two until I lost it and now have the lockback. Honestly the smaller knife did everything I required of it I just prefer a locker. The VG-10 is my favorite blade steel.

Until I finally stopped losing knives all the time, I made do with $3 knives from gun shows, Walmart, etc. I'd lose it before "quality" even became an issue. :ashamed001

I carry a Victorinox "soldier" everyday.Just enough tools to make it useful and still small enough for the pocket. I have a large variety of knives for skinning, filleting etc.

    Are Gerbers any good.

They used to be very good. Nowadays they're at the bottom end of the knife spectrum.

In the 80's I had a beautiful Gerber folder that was as well-made as anything on the market. The movers stole it.

I remember having a Gerber Multi-Plier in the mid-90's that had a blank knife blade. I mean, it was cut out and bead blasted, but never had an edge applied to it. Pure garbage.

    Mike,

It might help to know if you've got any specific requirements -- blade size, plain or serated, handle materials.

Spyderco's Byrd line (manufactured in China) has some quality designs and materials for a really low price.

I didn't vote since "sometimes" wasn't an option.

nothing specific in mind. small and light to fit in my pocket - mainly for opening boxes and cutting twine, etc. serrated not necessary, but it intrigues me. I like the look of spyderco but can't find them in my target price range.

Well, I went and bought a small Gerber Mini Paraframe for $13. Not a top of the line, I know, but I don't want a quality one just yet as I never know how long it will be with me. I also dug out my Old Timer SC-80T (3 blades) from a drawer. I like the Old Timer, but I love the really light weight of the Gerber and the slimmer profile - unfortunately they didn't have the serrated one. I do like the clip as well.

Incidentally, there was some of the blackish corrosion on my Old Timer blades. I thought they were stainless? I went at them with some Maas and QTips and an old tooth brush, and got a little bit of a shine back on them, but still some corrosion. Any ideas how to get the rest off? Is it similar to a straight - do I need some high grit sandpaper?

I think I have maybe 15-20 pocket knives lying around in various drawers and such. The one I keep on me all the time is a steel flat knife w/ blade, scissors, flat screwdriver/bottle opener and nail file/groomer that was handed down to me by my grandfather 40 years ago. I almost freaked when my wife borrowed it and left it on a table at the ranch one time. I immediately drove to the ranch to find it before someone else did.

I keep a Leatherman tool in my gym bag and a Spyderco (kept real sharp) in the truck. Comes in handy when I have to cut loose a horse pulling back on a lead that's about to either break the halter or flip or they go down in a trailer and they're tangled up. One quick cut usually goes through a 1" cotton or nylon rope.

    Sometimes is never an option.

You never know when you will need it. :D

Natch. I "sometimes" carry one: I'll not need it for weeks when I carry it daily, and the day it gets left at home, I need it twice or thrice.

That's not corrosion, it's a patina. Normal for a good carbon steel blade. This patina provides some resistance to the blade developing red rust, which is corrosion and has to be removed.

If you clean the patina off of a vintage knife, you will have removed a great deal of its resale value. And carbon steel is not necessarily inferior to stainless steel.

The reason Old Timer used a lot of it was, it was a good tough steel that can take and hold a great edge and it cost less.

You will find that knife users seek out the carbon steel yellow-handle Case knives over the "Tru-Sharp" stainless steel models which often end up in display cases.

To sometimes have a knife is to sometimes have a condom.

You never know when you are going to need it and when you do aren't you glad you have one?

Pre 9-11, I carried a pocket knife (3 blade Case) all the time. Unfortunately, it ended up in a TSA trash can in early 2002. "I forgot" wasn't an acceptable answer for the nice folks at airport security.

Since then, I rely on a 6" 3 blade folding hunting knife that I keep in my desk drawer at work.

I just ordered a daily carry knife. At work I will continue to carry the cybertool, but my new knife will remain in my pocket when not at work.
Small, 2.5" blade, but it will cut things that need to be cut, and won't take too much space in my pocket, and it looks classy. Pictures upon it's arrival.
