I'd start at 5. If you have been use to a vdh razor , you don't want to start at 9. Setting 5 is mid aggressive and you can adjust up or down from there.

How vintage are we talking ? I took a whiff of some 20 something old 4711, and it hasn't lost its scent.

 

It's awesome, but I grew up with it. Every Sunday our mom had us wear it to Church.
