Welcome aboard! You'll find lots of straight razor lovers (and a couple of straight razor nay-sayers) here. And lots of madmen. Your hypothesis is likely largely correct, and I applaud your dedication to a 30 day rule. I've been here for a year and have yet to make it all the way through one. That said, I can get a pretty fine shave from about 30 different shaving instruments, even if I am master of none.

Apologies on a very busy week. I've driven over a thousand miles, and never even left Denver. Stayed with the rule, but switched to FW. Glad to be slowing down for the week! Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado.

    Have a fabulous Friday!
    :)

Welcome to the crew! I have had great results with multiple adjustables. But most of the are Gillette. Fatboy, Slim and Black Beauty have all done right by me. Especially the Slim.

August 10 - Grand Blade Trials

    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (9)
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
    Soap - Mitchell's Wool Fat
    Brush - WCS Synthetic
    Post - Alum

Busy day, long day. Started with a really frustrating Dr. appointment. I was not a happy camper and a less than cooperative patient. Nothing major, just my usually monthly "med check" to make sure I'm not a raving addict because of the pain meds. But, they nearly drove me to raving just by their stupidity. I really dislike the practice I use for pain management but I'm too lazy to look for another. Plus I hate to go through the whole process of getting it started. I've dealt with the pain and its control for almost 9 years now, so I guess I can live with the pain in my posterior as well. Work was, well, work. Although something interesting may be cooking on that front. More as it develops. And, finally, SWMBO arrived back from Atlanta this evening so there was the unpacking and a late dinner out together.

So, finally, time to finish the Dorco ST-301 up on the trial. Fatboy, the Fat, and the West Coast brush. I will say that I got a fantastic lather with this brush and MWF tonight. I made sure and shook the brush extra and it did the job. Two passes and touch ups for the shave. No blood, the Dorco was smooth, and the baby showed up without a problem. Clearly and easily the best shave of the three.

I'm not totally surprised at that result. The Dorco is among the "less sharp" blade group and clearly performs better as the aggression rises. I'm kind of tempted to throw it in the Futur and give it a try on setting "me". That's for another night, though. The alum was only mildly warm in a couple of places so no complaints. Good finish to this blade and a good benchmark to judge the rest of the Dorco group against.

Tomorrow night will be the Dorco Prime in the Fatboy. Here's to Friday! And the start of what I hope is another great weekend for everyone!

    Screwtape A Shaving Butterfly

Unsolicited advice here: Based on your results with a straight, you undoubtedly have your skin stretching technique down cold and always stretch your skin taut with your offhand. But are you remembering to do the same thing when shaving with a DE? Many people don’t and that's a mistake.

The three main mantras here on the 30DC for DE shaving are "skin stretch" and "ride the cap" and "no pressure".

Just thought I would toss that idea out there for you to check.

Thursday night August 10 - back to a Fatboy

    Gillette Fatboy on 4 / Topaz Platinum ( 1 )
    Alluminati Envy White badger brush
My Red Green Duct Tape Special frankensoap
Alum and Thayers Witch Hazel Original Astringent

After shipping my user Gillette adjustables off to Delta Echo for refurbishment, I dug a spare Fatboy out of my collection. This one has much better finish than my grungy user but seems to have a slight mechanical issue. The TTO mechanism binds just before the doors close and has to be turned past a definite hitch. Once closed though it shuts securely with the 1/4 turn lock and the dial adjustment works properly.

After getting the usual good lather whipped up from my Italian soft almond frankensoap, I cranked my "new" Fatboy all the way past my usual "3" to an awe-inspiring setting of "4", and did my normal two passes. I can't say that the increase in setting resulted in a closer shave at all, but the alum was a bit warmer. Other than that, a good shave.

Ahhhhhh.....Friday. It's been a busy week that went by quickly. I always look forward to Friday morning shaves with Mitchell's. It brings the week to a nice close each time. Today's shave was a nice one, as expected, and I'm ready to make it through the day so I can rest a little this weekend.

    Enjoy your day!

I have really enjoyed this combo. Everything just seems to work very well together. Two and 1/4 passes paying attention and skin stretching proofed to be the ticket this morning. I ended up with a near perfect shave and the results on my lower right neck continue to improve. Better yet, I had no irritation at all. I finished off with a splash of F&C Capri. Happy Friday everyone. :happy069:

Thank you, Clint. Saturday will still be busy. We're playing at the school intra-squad scrimmage tomorrow night. We'll do our halftime in a live performance for the first time. It's been raining here every day, probably just like Atlanta, so our practice time has been impacted. Could be interesting!
