Yesterday was an interesting day. It was fine until about 5:30. I was still at work and my wife called, which is odd because she knows I can rarely answer my phone at work and doesn't call unless there's a problem. Well, our little boy (2.5 years old) was climbing down the basement stairs and fell off the side three stairs from the bottom. At that point the stairs have made a 180 degree turn and there's an opening below the railing that goes down to the floor. It's not a big distance.....unless you're a toddler. She was right there with him but didn't get to him in time to grab him. So he fell and hopped right back up, crying, but nothing seemed wrong as far as broken bones or anything like that. But, then he became quite lethargic and sleepy. He wasn't talking much and when he did he sounded slurred. So we were thinking head injury. A call to the pediatrician's nurse line resulted in them telling my wife to call 911 for the paramedics to evaluate whether he was stable enough for her to take him to the ER or for them to transport. So all this time I'm gathering up my stuff and rushing home leaving some parents to oversee the band kids being picked up (practice was over). The EMTs arrive and basically say they would not transport him and that he seemed fine - that he shouldn't go to the ER. AHHHH!!! Conflicting medical advice. I got home right after they left. We took him to the ER at Children's Hospital anyway, but felt a little better that we didn't have to rush up there. He got checked out and was cleared of any type of major head injury. It's possible he has a concussion but there is no way to test for that other than seeing the symptoms. So we'll have to watch him closely the next few days and go again if something comes up.

He LOVED the fire trucks and emergency vehicles that showed up! He talked about those the rest of the night as he began to perk up. We're thankful that nothing was majorly wrong. However, as you all know, it's no fun to take your kid to the ER or to receive conflicting advice on what to do. I guess always err on the side of caution to be safe.

Anyway, I applaud you if you are still reading!!

On to the shave. Nice, smooth, and comfortable results this morning. The Fat looked a little foamy on the brush but worked into really nice lather with normal face lathering. The I1 injector swiped it away easily. Fine American capped it off with scent and a touch of coolness. Excellent way to approach a groggy morning!

@entropy1049 - you are exactly right. The EMTs said "he seems fine to us" which bristled my wife. I wasn't there for this, but she said she told them "Well.....he's not fine, I can tell you that". We know our children best and even though he was perking up we still felt the need to go in.

Well, here we are. In all its glory, the STD-301 from Dorco. The Dollar Store blade. Available at Dollar General or Family Dollar, this is the el-cheapo blade from Dorco. The blade is made in Vietnam, though all Dorcos appear to be made there now as well. There is documentation naming both South Korea and Vietnam on different blades, but the most recent seem to indicate production of the blades is done in Vietnam, while all corporate activities are carried out in South Korea. And DorcoUSA as well.

The first thing I noticed about this blade is the really cheap plastic dispenser. This isn't the same as the dispenser with the old Gillettes or even the modern Israeli drug store blades. Quite cheap and a bit sticky to get a blade out. The second thing I noticed is that the blade definitely appears thinner than a normal Dorco. The feel of the ends of the blade when loading the razor also feel thinner. I have no way of measuring them, but the thumb feel and eye test say thinner. The third thing I noticed is, on the 3 setting on the Fatboy, you have to work to get a good shave. I tried my usual two passes and touch ups and the touch ups took forever. The end result was a DFS but not a great one, with two weepers from trying to work my neck down to DFS. And the alum? Burn, baby burn. I really hit some irritation trying to get a decent shave with this blade.

Clearly this is not the same blade as the ST-301, Prime or Titan. Now, it may be the "seconds" off of the line, or perhaps where they run their second-rate material to use it up. I am interested to see if it will improve and how much as I open the Fatty up. I'm expecting some improvement, but how much is questionable. Especially if it is as dull as I think it is. Not a sharp blade at all.

Now, back to my calling it the "el-cheapo" Dorco. Yep, you can walk into Dollar General just like I did and throw down one whole dollar plus a few pennies in tax and own a package of 5 of these things. Sounds good, right? Well, that makes each of these blades cost 20 cents. You can buy a 100 pack of Dorco ST-301 on the bay for $7.91 shipped, which would be 7.9 cents. Or how about a thousand for $54.47 for just over a nickel a blade. Primes go for 8.9 to 9.7 cents each. And Titans - 15 cents. Suddenly the bargain doesn't seem like a great bargain at all. Especially if they can't produce any better shave than I just got. We can always hope until we know.

An interesting observation on the false economy of these blades. At $0.20/each, you're well into premium blade territory.

Your observations on the STD-301 have called my own thoughts into question. I assumed that it was more like the Duff Beer vat and that the Dollar Store blades just didn't go through the additional coating processes (i.e., Platinum and PTFE). Interestingly, the back of the package seems to somewhat contradict the info at PaceShaving in that the packaging implies the existence of a comfort coating.

Personally, I've only really had decent results from these blades in one razor- a post-War Aluminium British Tech that seemed to not like any other blade I threw at it. I wonder if this could be a blade better suited to a shavette or, at least, a razor which permits an extremely shallow angle.

I suppose you could always call the 888-number on the package and see what they say.

TGIF my fellow Denizens!! You've made it through another workweek.
As is my wont, Friday is Bay Rum day. It's also the day I wear Red in support of the members of the Armed Forces deployed overseas defending us. So are you wearing red today?
This morning's shave is the last of the week for the SA-109/Voskhod duo. For the rest of Adjustable August I'll be using my newly acquired 1967 Slim Adjustable. First blade up will be Gillette Silver Blue, my baseline blade.
One of my "ritual" shaves is a Bay Rum shave on Friday. JJ#1 whipped up a slick, fragrant lather from that great Route 66 soap Rum Runner.
My weekday stubble was no match for the soap and the SA-109. 2.5 passes and I was smooth. As usual the post shave face feel was fantastic.
Splashed on some VIBR and Friday was off to a flying start.

Scary stuff, Perry. No doubt the right call. I remember when my oldest girl was a toddler, my wife called me and said she found her holding an open bottle of medicine in her hand (something relatively benign like allergy medicine or children's Tylenol if I remember correctly). Anyway, like you, we were horrified at the possibility of what may have happened and we called the paramedics immediately. They showed up with an ambulance and fire truck and had the experience and level heads to count the number of pills left in the bottle and compare them to the label. Fortunately, there was only one missing, so a non emergency situation. Despite the fact that I felt foolish when it was over, I do remember the panic and terror of the event, and I would make that 911 call again 10 times out of 10. Glad your situation turned out like ours. I'll be praying for you guys that everything gets "back to normal" ASAP. Those incidents can spook you for a while.

@Bama Samurai started another thread regarding blade reviews on which @PanChango commented that it is important to develop some good technique before you completely write off a blade. This blade is a perfect example of this for me. I first tried them a few months into wet shaving and didn't like them at all. I kept the tuck around, and today I got my 10th shave with one of these blades. It was nice and smooth and resulted in a DFS on two passes. I can't asked for much more than this. Now I may need to find a few Astra and Treet carbon blades as I made the sake rushed judgement on these blades. I hope everyone has a great day.

Quite cheap and a bit sticky to get a blade out. The second thing I noticed is that the blade definitely appears thinner than a normal Dorco. The feel of the ends of the blade when loading the razor also feel thinner. I have no way of measuring them, but the thumb feel and eye test say thinner. The third thing I noticed is, on the 3 setting on the Fatboy, you have to work to get a good shave. I tried my usual two passes and touch ups and the touch ups took forever. The end result was a DFS but not a great one, with two weepers from trying to work my neck down to DFS. And the alum? Burn, baby burn. I really hit some irritation trying to get a decent shave with this blade.

Clearly this is not the same blade as the ST-301, Prime or Titan. Now, it may be the "seconds" off of the line, or perhaps where they run their second-rate material to use it up. I am interested to see if it will improve and how much as I open the Fatty up. I'm expecting some improvement, but how much is questionable. Especially if it is as dull as I think it is. Not a sharp blade at all.

Now, back to my calling it the "el-cheapo" Dorco. Yep, you can walk into Dollar General just like I did and throw down one whole dollar plus a few pennies in tax and own a package of 5 of these things. Sounds good, right? Well, that makes each of these blades cost 20 cents. You can buy a 100 pack of Dorco ST-301 on the bay for $7.91 shipped, which would be 7.9 cents. Or how about a thousand for $54.47 for just over a nickel a blade. Primes go for 8.9 to 9.7 cents each. And Titans - 15 cents. Suddenly the bargain doesn't seem like a great bargain at all. Especially if they can't produce any better shave than I just got. We can always hope until we know.

So decided to go ahead and go with Proraso Green tonight to change it up plus my face needed some menthol after this hot muggy day. Also decided to give the Schick Injector adjustable a shot tonight set on 5 and it did an awesome job. 3 pass BBS with only minor sting from the alum on the chin. Pretty good for a first use if I do say so myself.

Yesterday was an interesting day. It was fine until about 5:30. I was still at work and my wife called, which is odd because she knows I can rarely answer my phone at work and doesn't call unless there's a problem. Well, our little boy (2.5 years old) was climbing down the basement stairs and fell off the side three stairs from the bottom. At that point the stairs have made a 180 degree turn and there's an opening below the railing that goes down to the floor. It's not a big distance.....unless you're a toddler. She was right there with him but didn't get to him in time to grab him. So he fell and hopped right back up, crying, but nothing seemed wrong as far as broken bones or anything like that. But, then he became quite lethargic and sleepy. He wasn't talking much and when he did he sounded slurred. So we were thinking head injury. A call to the pediatrician's nurse line resulted in them telling my wife to call 911 for the paramedics to evaluate whether he was stable enough for her to take him to the ER or for them to transport. So all this time I'm gathering up my stuff and rushing home leaving some parents to oversee the band kids being picked up (practice was over). The EMTs arrive and basically say they would not transport him and that he seemed fine - that he shouldn't go to the ER. AHHHH!!! Conflicting medical advice. I got home right after they left. We took him to the ER at Children's Hospital anyway, but felt a little better that we didn't have to rush up there. He got checked out and was cleared of any type of major head injury. It's possible he has a concussion but there is no way to test for that other than seeing the symptoms. So we'll have to watch him closely the next few days and go again if something comes up.

He LOVED the fire trucks and emergency vehicles that showed up! He talked about those the rest of the night as he began to perk up. We're thankful that nothing was majorly wrong. However, as you all know, it's no fun to take your kid to the ER or to receive conflicting advice on what to do. I guess always err on the side of caution to be safe.

Anyway, I applaud you if you are still reading!!

On to the shave. Nice, smooth, and comfortable results this morning. The Fat looked a little foamy on the brush but worked into really nice lather with normal face lathering. The I1 injector swiped it away easily. Fine American capped it off with scent and a touch of coolness. Excellent way to approach a groggy morning!

This is my first use of a very special soap, Jeff’s Soap. The soap is made by Cold River with the proceeds going to help with medical bills. To my nose the soap has a bright clean fougere type scent with a citrus and floral background. Even my wife and daughter had positive comments on the scent which is always a huge plus. I have long thought that Route 66 soaps were among the easiest to lather. I would say that Jeff's Soap is just as easy to lather with excellent slickness. After 5 shaves the Feather FHS blade gets a little tired so I went with a 3 pass shave followed by touching up my lower right neck and jawline. The end result was near perfect. After using the Genesis for 24 shaves I will put it aside and use some of my other razors. Given its consistently good shaves and ease of use, the Genesis has earned a spot on my "A" string. I finished the shave with a splash of Myrsol Agua Balsamica. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

Glad that there was nothing wrong. I don't blame you guys for being cautious, especially with a head injury. No greater worry than your child is injured.

Still sailing smoothly along with The Spoiler and Milord. I don't know what it is about the Satin Tip but I always end up with a very creamy rich lather. And even though its a smaller knot, It always makes enough lather for my shave with plenty to spare. With school starting back up work has been crazy busy this week and will probably be so next week too. But alas its Friday, thank goodness! Have a great weekend my friends!
