What about hog hair, or synthetic? My Parker silver tip doesn’t seem to be aggressive enough to give me enough soap to have a good lather. Any suggestions? Thanks
Big Sam Did you really just start shaving? If your silvertip is not producing enough lather you are doing something wrong. Being new to shaving you are jumping around, first you are cutting yourself, then you ask about a 200.00 razor, now you can't get enough lather. Slow down keep shaving and things will fall into place. Sent from my QTAQZ3 using Tapatalk
There is no such thing as a "soap" brush, or a "cream" brush, or a "face lathering" brush, or a "bowl lathering" brush, only "personal preference" brushes. Truth. Learn how to use the tools ya got! So help me I’ve been shaving with a double edge less than two weeks. Two weeks ago, and the last hump teen years, I have been shaving with an electric razor “Panasonic and other brands" over the years. I recently installed new heads on my Panasonic so I know the cutters the were sharp. I could shave with that thing and three hours later I felt like I had never shaved. Even when it was new it was the same results. I decided to go back shaving with a double edge razor that I first started shaving with when I was about 18 with a double edge Gillette razor. I am now 82. I started my collection of tools about 3 weeks ago and have spent close to $300. I am inclined to wont the very best I can buy. 64 years ago is a long time fro me to remember my shaving technique So anyway you cut it I'm still a newbie.
Okay, Sam. Go grab a favorite beverage, something to munch on, come back, get comfy, then click on this ---> http://theshaveden.com/forums/threads/shave-school-master-sticky.16034/ From there, click on any of the topics in red that interest you. There's everything from how to lather, what razor to choose, how to shave the neck, and a ton of other great info.
Big Sam Me too started in 1958 when I was in highschool. Started in March of this year, going back to de razors. I've got a nice collection of razors, brushes, and soaps and creams. I don't need half no three quarters of the stuff I have, but it keeps me going, you know being retired. I enjoy looking at these forums and the online venders. Like I said before go slow and it will come back to you. Sent from my QTAQZ3 using Tapatalk
Sam my brother, take a deep breath and come on over to the 30 Day Rule/Focus thread. Pick a razor, blade, brush(boar or badger) soap or cream and start shaving. A new month is two days away. In the meantime by all means read the sticky. Relax and enjoy your shaves!!
No rules broken(trust me). As has been stated grab your favorite beverage and some snacks, head over to the Shave School thread and read the Master Sticky. Lots of good info there. You're doin' fine.
As said before, any brush will lather any soap. The only variable I ever factor in is size of the brush and size of the soap container. Enjoy the reading.
Hello Sam. Good to meet you. The "rule" is just the title of the helpful thread, not a "real" rule. A bit of my story.... When I went back to using a blade, I forgot most of my technique from the 1970's. But it took me about ten shaves with the same razor and blade combination before it really came together. I was using Noxema cream from a red can and getting good results. Then I started using shaving soap and a brush and tried to make a decent lather. That was harder, but eventually, I got the hang of it. Now, I get better results. So, Sam, if you are not afraid to buy green bananas, then try the 30 Day Rule. It is fun to post the daily results and read what others are doing. Soon you will make shaving fun, instead of a chore.
Sam, by all means join the fun suggested above. But I do have a comment about your Silvertip and picking up the soap. Try not bearing down into the soap while your swirling, in fact, just the opposite, try making contact with just the tips of the brush. Same way on your face, try holding the loaded brush away from your face only using the tips as you swirl and paint the soap onto your face. I've found the softer the bristle or hair or fiber the less pressure to use.
I scrape a almond size amount into my shave bowl. Perfect lather every time. I almost never load from the puck anymore. Sent from my LGUS997 using Tapatalk
To me, this is an excellent answer. If you are a newbie, you can get really caught up in "swirled for twenty seconds", "load for thirty swirls" etc. the answer is that the brush it loaded when there is enough soap in it. And people have a tendency to exaggerate too. If you don't build lather in top of the puck like your ancestors did it, I highly recommend just putting it into the bowl and going from there. At least until you get a handle in it.
You're talking creams, right? You don't scrape hard soap into your bowl. Or do you? If so, just seems odd to me.
I do it quite often when traveling. My softer soaps are all stuffed into sticks, but I mostly don't use them that way. I scrape a dollop into my bowl and lather. I have also recommended to newbies that they measure a proper amount into a bowl so that they know they are getting a proper amount. Seems like not loading enough product is a super common problem. Before discovering forums I always built my lather on the puck and never had a problem. Then I started reading about loading a brush, x number of seconds or swirls etc, and had all kinds of troubles. Funny how reading about the "right" way to do it can sure fix a problem that doesn't exist. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I thought the video you posted earlier was spot on for being foolproof. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
