    Congrats.

I can truly say that when I watched the numbers come in and heard his speech, I cried.

I cried for my kids that they may have a chance, that we may turn this car around.

It will be the best birthday present for me when he takes office.

    As a side note.

Can't anyone be happy about the fact that this situation has ended? Why must we focus on what color he is? Would you care if you were blind and no one told you? Would you care if he was pink with green plaid hair? The fact that he can get the job done is all that matters. The fact that he is going to involve the public is all that matters.

I'm glad it's all over. Two years of intense campaigning for the office of president, all over in one night. Thank God it's done.

Obama won fair and square. Congrats to him. I hope the news media can find someone else to talk about now.

Now was that called for? If there was a smiley or roll eyes I could excuse it as sarcasm. Without that it just reads as petty and mean.

Well, I doubt it was Vesa being petty and mean, as he isn't even in the US, and I don't think he is a US citizen, but I may be wrong on that.

If this thread can not stay civil it will be locked.

    Bottom line is this:

Barrack Hussein Obama won the election fair and square. Whether we voted for him or not is irrelevant. He is going to be our next President and he is going to be the next Commander in Chief.

As Americans we have an obligation to stand by him and support him.

Here's to making the greatest country on Earth even greater!

I have only these words for our President elect; good luck and Godspeed.

I am going to try to be a good boy in political discussions over here.

I am not happy with the results. I am as disappointed with the Democrats winning as I am with how Republicans squandered what they were.

It is historic, because Obama won, and he is black (I don't keep up with the current preferred term du jour, so if this is an inappropriate term, understand it is not intentionally meant to offend). It simply is. What I am hoping is that so many on the left will keep to their word, and that we have now finally transcended race. Do we really need quotas and affirmative action now if a black man can win the presidency with a large margin (largest Democratic margin since Johnson, I believe)?

It was not historic in terms of voter turnout. I know that every last ballot is not in yet, but this was not historic in terms of numbers. In 2004, Bush won with 62,040,610 votes to John Kerry's 59,028,444. The totals so far for last night are 62,682,786 for Obama, and 55,543,823 for McCain. If you look at how many precincts have reported, and where the few remaining are, you will no doubt realize that these numbers aren't going to jump significantly. Currently, nearly 3 million less voters went to the polls this year than in 2004. The early voting may have created a mirage of massive, historic voter turnout, but the end conclusion was that these were more than likely people that normally would have voted on election day anyway. For all of his voter turnout efforts - and they helped him well - Obama only gained about 3 million more than Kerry - but he made them count, and won them in the right places. The bigger story seems that McCain lost more than 6 million of the votes Bush won.

I congratulate Obama. He ran a good campaign. I now pray that my fears of an Obama presidency will not turn true. Democrats now hold strong majorities in the House and Senate, and control the White House. The responsibility is now theirs, beginning in January. They may do well to heed the story of the goose that laid the golden egg. Overreaching was the undoing of DNC hopes in 1994. It was the undoing of GOP hopes in 2006. Power corrupts. Absolute power . . . .

I don't buy into calls from the left that I must now join in the happiness and merriment. That never happened after 2000. Neither will I engage in the type of vitriolic hatred that has been manifested against Bush for the last nearly 8 years. I will become a happy warrior in the minority, fighting for conservative, not Republican, ideals.

Yeah, we don't usually have too many of these discussions, but it is the Presidential Race and well, people want to talk about it, it seems.

Anyway, the election is over. Hopefully the discussions will be too, soon.

Congratulations to President Elect Mr. Obama. May he have a successful presidency. May he hire the right people that have the wisdom and talent to do the right thing for the American people and the world. May he have the humility to admit when he is wrong and then do what is right. May he be given a chance to succeed and not be hounded or blocked by people prejudging him. May the secret service protect him and his family from harm. These are just some of things we all hope for for any United States President or any world leader for that matter.

May God Bless our great country in these difficult times and may President Obama lead us with strength, courage and conviction to do what is Right.

I am not sure what has changed, but according to the new this morning the voter turnout was around 64% which is highest since 1908. Obviously more numbers are coming in, but that much of a jump in voter turnout is pretty impressive regardless.

Of course on the scheme of 100%, it is pathetic.. but hey.. not much to say about that.

Would it were true that such sentiments were held by the opposition on inauguration day, 2001.

I'm not finding those numbers. Could you give me a link to where I can find them? They don't seem to correspond to what the total numbers are. If turnout is higher, in terms of percentage, than 2004, then why 3 million fewer votes cast? Have a significant portion of voters in the 2004 election died? It just doesn't make sense that turnout percentage was higher, but votes cast were lower. Even if it is true, then it would suggest a net NEGATIVE gain in registered voters, which is the opposite of what Obama was striving for. Are you sure that voter turnout is not just for one particular demographic, or one particular state?

Not really, I believe the statement was made as a personal observation and interpretation of events after the 2001 Inauguration. Yes, it's being made sarcastically but it's not proving your point that the President Elect at that time was being overly pre judged. One could say the same of your opinion of the current President Elect. Yes?
