Sunday October 22 - breaking stuff Delta Echo Gillette Fatboy on 4 / Topaz Platinum (1) Semogue Owners Club cherrywood boar brush My Red Green Duct Tape Special frankensoap Alum and Portland General Store's Willow Toner At lunch today I broke a tooth. The back enamel chunk flaked off a molar with a large filling in it. It's not painful (yet at least) but I foresee a painfully expensive crown in my near future. Then, while finishing my shave, I dropped and shattered my alum. It's a good thing I don’t plan to drive anywhere today.... For the rest, I only had a short time to shave today so it was a hurried job. I did a semi-competently mediocre job of lathering the Frankensoap with the SOC. One quick pass with the Fatboy gave me a decent shave. Then I smashed the alum. A finish with musty vinegar seemed entirely fitting for the day. (Did I mention that it is windy, cold, grey and rainy out?) Tomorrow may be a better shave to start a better day. I just have to get through today's shift first...
Can’t blame anyone for binning a puck of Williams. You don’t even need a good reason, pure spite will do.
-Brian Brown 6/8 1/2 Hollow -Simpson Duke 3 Pure -Stubble Trubble Pirate Cowboy -Ogallala Bay Rum Limes and Peppercorns It’s always nice on the weekends when I can have a relaxing shave, have my choice of gear, and not be too tired to care one way or the other. @Linuxguile - I lathered using Merkur Man’s Shiny Lather Method today, and got an excellent lather with the Stubble Trubble. I spent right about three and a half minutes working on the puck to completely fill the brush, and then another minute and a half on my face. I still needed to add some dribbles a few times to get it where I wanted it. So five minutes in all. I would say that’s a very typical time to get to the “Unicorn Lather” stage for all of the soaps I use the most in this fashion: Stirling, Soap Commander, B&M, Mickey Lee, Jeeves..... Today’s shave was as close to perfect as they get. This razor consistently leaves me with a BBS shave, time after time. The only downside is that it is something of a slow go razor, as the spikes at both heel and toe require a little extra care. My AD’s are really in remission of late, but I see another Brian Brown in my future.
I'm sorry about your day. It's a real bummer to damage a tooth. I hope you can get it addressed quickly with no pain. I lost an alum bar pretty much the same way you did. I kinda figure I'll never actually finish an alum bar...I'll just drop it and then have to replace it. I keep spares on hand for that reason. I haven't used it much lately, though.
The only pain I foresee is purely financial -- I am going to pay my dentist the price of a top-line Kent or Simpson badger brush...
October 22 I was short on time this morning, so I performed a quick two-pass shave in the shower. I used a Dorco twin blade disposable with a pivoting head (similar to a Gillette Atra cart). The blade had a dozen or so shaves on it. I placed a few squirts of KMF shave cream in one palm and used both hands to rub it into my face. It made a thin, but slick, lather. I shaved with my left hand (I'm a lefty) and inspected the progress and reapplied lather as needed with the other hand. Otherwise, I tried to stay, more or less, with my normal two-pass routine. It was DFS+, and I was pretty happy with it. Shaves like this look and feel good for most of the day; however, by tomorrow I will be able to tell it wasn't a DE shave. I'm already feeling a little more stubble than usual. I finished up with unrefined shea butter (hardly ever finish a shave without it) and Ermenegildo Zegna Uomo EDT. The EDT has a light citrus and aqua scent, and it's much different than my other aftershaves or colognes. I use it mostly during the the summer or when I'm looking for something light. It was included in a shopping bag full of toiletries that I picked up in a group buy through work. It sells for about $20, and I think it would be a good choice at that price. Not a bad shave this morning for a five-minute time investment and no cleanup afterward. I hope you all have a great Sunday!
Thanks Charlie, I am doing pretty well actually. Work is peaking out, and I am burning the midnight oil. Not a lot of time for anything else, but this weekend I pretty much sat on my hind end for two days. Hope you and your bride are well.
Razor: Gillette 1930's OC Ball End Made in Canada Blade: Personna Tungsten 74 (13) Brush: Elite Razor Tres Amigo w/ Sunset Synthetic Soap: Jeeves of Hudson Street Private Study A/S: Floid Amber Great way to start a week with different shave equipment. The brush easily whipped up the Private Study into a thick, slick, protective lather.
I hope my Colgate Barbershop one will be better,. although I've had it around a looong time(it was a PIF). It's losing some particles. Better try it soon, I suppose.
Good job on the blade test. Sounds like the soap is destined for being used as hand soap. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I really wanted to like the Williams. The scent is good, the slickness is incredible, but it's just too much aggravation to get a (miserable in my case) lather.
Hope you day goes better tomorrow. I have read of some dissolving small pieces of alum in the store brand witch hazel. I’ll see if I can find the post. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
