Thanks, Andrew. I made the display shelf a number of years ago out of walnut. The handle in the photo is stained maple. I did get a 2" thick short board of Walnut a few months ago, and have started turning a few handles out of that.
Thank you Andrew. I buy only the pucks from Mystic Water so I use the empty tubs for those soaps along with Fine. I use the blue tubs from Reef Point on the reloading bench since they match Dillon colors. My wife uses some for her jewelry making and the rest get recycled.
OCtober 2017 XX-XXII October 2017 updates.... Starting to miss the Shavettes, but the Fatip yields results on par! Super busy weekend....these were the setups and all were pretty good. Hope everyone has a great Monday afternoon. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado. Have a great Monday!
Well the easy answer is yes, yes it can. However, the Blue definitely outperformed a large number of other Chinese garbage blades (and a certain Czech blade) by actually performing one full shave. I wish there was a way of getting a Blue that was in true mint condition - just like they would have been back in the day. Although the ones I was sent were better than any others I've seen.
Now what this whole experiment had ME thinking was "Neal needs to get himself a vintage 'bladesaver' stropping device for carbon steel DE blades.". They really do work and would probably restore your blades to near mint condition for a true vintage shaving experience.
Glad to hear your razor gave up on bleeding you white. I guess it must just have been one of those "shaves to keep you humble" after all. I have noticed that almost everyone who tries Sudsy Soapery shaving soap has good things to say about its performance.
Yup, very odd. I've used the razor for over 50 shaves and only had one notably bad day with it. RE: the soap- I stated on another reply that I just need to determine if this particular scent is for me or not. Way out of my usual scent range, but that's good too.
23 OCtober Pre-Shave: Hot Shower Brush: 28mm Faux Finest Badger, Frank Shaving(FS) Soap: The Lounge, Stirling Soap Co Razor: Black Aluminium General, Colonial Razors Blade: Kai Pink, Kai Captain Titan Mild (1) Post-Shave: Cold Water rinse, OSMA Alum block and Lilac Vegetal AS (Veg), Pinaud Photo: Today I fell off of focus and used my new Alu General. I paired it with a Kai Pink blade. This is only my second "NEW" razor since I started wet shaving seven years ago. I have only used vintage razors for the past nine months. After using the Valet for the past two months this shave was effortless. I now know way others love this razor. It is lighter and the head is bigger than what I am use too, but neither of this two issues where able to prevent me from a three pass BBS shave. Honestly this was one of the best shaves I have had in a long time.
I actually just received an UNOPENED pack of 5 along with an English Flat Bottom Tech. I've no idea of their actual condition, though...
Monday October 23 - super goop lathering Delta Echo Gillette Fatboy on 4 / Topaz Platinum (2) Semogue Owners Club cherrywood boar brush Stirling Naked and Smooth soap Alum and Lucky Tiger Today has been much better than yesterday. I managed to get in to see my dentist early this morning and get my tooth fixed. The freezing has worn off with no aftereffects, and the wallet biopsy was only about half as bad as I was expecting. I enjoyed a leisurely shave this afternoon. After reading what Andrew @Linuxguile and Jared @PickledNorthern had to say about super goop lathers, I decided to try the technique myself. I chose to use my troublesome Semogue SOC boar brush and my only Stirling soap, which up until now has given me good but not fabulous performance. I started with a fairly damp brush and swirled lightly in the tub for over a minute. When pasty lather started to form, I trickled water on top of the soap and continued. I added water like this three or four times. By then I had been swirling for several minutes and thick creamy lather was oozing over the sides of the tub and had filled the boar brush nearly to the base of the knot. I then added a bit more water to the brush and face lathered. The result was both the best lather I have ever gotten with this boar brush and also the thickest slickest lather I ever got from my Stirling soap. I ended up doing three passes instead of my usual two just so I could enjoy the lather a little longer, and the shave was a smooth and error-free BBS. My big new Osma alum bar was totally silent on its first outing. I am clearly far too stingy with my soaps normally (creams are different because I use a generous dollop squirted on the brush or in the bowl). For November I will use the Semogue SOC boar brush exclusively and will focus on much heavier loading than I have used in the past. Mind you, with a couple decades worth of product in my inventory, being a soap miser is just plain stupid anyway...
Glad to hear today went better for you. I bet you’ll go through the soaps in short order now. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Razor: Gillette 1930's OC Ball End Made in Canada Blade: Personna Tungsten 74 (14) Brush: Elite Razor Tres Amigo w/ Sunset Synthetic Soap: Jeeves of Hudson Street Private Study A/S: Floid Amber
Thanks very much Perry. I like the Private Study soap very much. It easily whips into a great lather. It looks like they are updating their site as they aren't listing many of their soaps.
Not my best shave today. A few small nicks and weepers from the straight. Second pass with DE was patchy. Also I received what I thought was a puck of I Coloniali Mango, but was Really I Colonai Cream. Who knows, maybe I’ll like it. At least I enjoyed the Stirling Bergamot Lavendar this morning. And the guy I bought the cream from threw on a boar brush for good measure, so I guess it didn’t end up too badly. Besides, tomorrow is another day.
Your description of Derby blades is very eloquent! Here in my neck of the woods, we'd just say the blades stank.
