What I learned in music today :

So what is the best hard/punk cover of a sappy pop song? I've got a few ideas.

 

I would say Sweet Dreams by Marilyn Manson, except the Eurythmics are legit.

 

Check out Lords of the New Church covering Like a Virgin a year or two after it came out... or even Alien Ant Farms redoing Michael Jackson's Smooth Criminal. But that one became a hit in its own right.

...and yes, Annie Lennox can croon.

 

Dave Stewart is widely regarded as one of the best engineer/producers in the world.

 

I was into this phase of MacKaye. Saw them for five bucks in a college gym.
