What kind of toothpaste do you use?

Discussion in 'The Chatterbox' started by Zen Master Kool-Aid, Nov 12, 2008.

  1. I don't shave with it. I'm curious.

I use Mentadent and I'm happy enough with it, but considering there's an awful lot of chatter about grooming around this forum someone might be able to suggest a potential upgrade if there is such.

I don't care so much about the flavor, but its ability to do the job is sort of key.

The Mentadent keeps my pearly whites pearly and white enough (and I do enjoy my coffee and wine) but is there something out there with a little more potent whitening power?

I've read studies. They concluded that the people who used whitening tooth past had whiter teeth by half a shad to no difference at all. I personally use colgate total. You can use crest white strips and other at home whiteners once to twice a year to keep them pearly.

  4. I use the Rembrandt whitening strips and they do a really good job over a 6 day whitening regiment.

I've also had them whitened at the dentist and to be frank, the results are exactly the same unless you want to blind people. The dentist can get your teeth whiter than a strip, but strips are definitely sufficient in my experience. I don't smoke or chew tobacco, though so it might be a different experience for someone that does.

That said, I have noticed a difference from using the Mentadent and other people have asked me what kind of toothpaste I use because the change in my enamel was so dramatic when I first started using it. This is, of course, my personal experience, but it has been good to me so far. If I could get away from the bi-annual whitening strip ritual, that would be a plus but its only 30 minutes per day for 6 days... I can suffer through it if necessary.

To put enough peroxide in a whitening tooth paste would make it taste rather horrible. And also to put enough to make it taste that bad and to use on a regular basis wouldnt be a good idea due to long term use causing hypersensitivity. Honestly, I think one of the best things to do is to use a sonic tooth brush. I've been using one for years and my teeth are noticably whiter than whan I wasnt using one.

The toothbrush was invented in Arkansas. If it had been invented anywhere else it would have been called a teethbrush! :happy102

Marvis -- I prefer the classic mint but also have tried and like Jasmine Mint, Aquatic Mint, Fruit Mint and Ginger Mint. The classic mint is amazing at leaving your mouth feeling fresh and clean.

Colgate total. The "total" means it includes triclosan, which is great at killing bacteria. Nothing else i've founds works as well for me, it's easy to find, and comes in several varieties, including whitening.

I have a friend who is a dentist, and have asked him this question. His answer: Whatever you prefer. The most important aspect is the brushing, not the paste. As for whitening, all these different whiteners are all going to do just about the same thing. Better results with the white strips than with the toothpaste - the toothpaste just doesn't stay on your teeth long enough to do anything. Ultimately they all use the same chemicals as dentists use - but at a much lower concentration, as they can't sell it at the higher dentist concentration over the counter. You just aren't going to get your teeth dramatically whiter with anything you can buy at the store and use at home.

So use whatever toothpaste you prefer, and focus more on your brushing technique and flossing.

As for killing the germs, go with a good mouthwash. The toothpaste isn't going to get into those regions where the nastier bugs like to hang out.

I haven't used toothpaste in a long time. I use my own tooth soap. I get great dental check-ups, so I will stick with that for now.

Mike is correct. One of the biggest problems today in the microbial world is what we call biofilms. They are in simple terms, different bacterias forming a film together to make a super colony. The biggest problem is how to treat biofilms and remove them as they are much harder to remove than just a single type of bacteria. The sticky film on your teeth in the morning is a biofilm. You have many different aerobic and anaerobic bacteria as well as fungi living in your mouth at any given time. No matter how well you brush, floss, or rinse, you will never remove them all.

No the main idea of the toothbrush and toothpaste is to dislodge biofilms and clean them off your teeth, much like soap. Many contain slight abrasives to help in doing so and many contain agents to kill microbes. I suggest the sonic tooth brush because it helps to break up the biofilm and after using one for a couple years I think my teeth are much cleaner due to it. Also, it will help clean other gunk off your teeth such as agents that stain if you brush after consuming them. Most other things are just gimmics. You wont get you teeth as white as going to dentist with strips or toothpaste, but the strips will make them noticably whiter which is fine for most people.
