Half the fun I had with my Ming Shi 2000S was finding the setting that worked best. I found it ineffective at less than 3, very aggressive at setting Neal (for the new 30 Day Crew Members - Maximum Overdrive), and Goldie Locks between 4-1/5 to 5. There's all those variables like finding the angle of attack on into blades and soap. Keep going Dan! It's a fun razor given the budget price and retro modern styling.

    DECember Lather Decadence!

Route 66 Barbershop Hop, Jayaruh #130 / Maggard Synth
    Suribachi bowl & cool water
    Schick Golden 500 J-3 ('58-'64) & Schick "Chick" blade
Shulton Old Spice AS, Unrefined Shea butter

A conversation about Old Spice scented soap inspired a well know combo in my den. Kathleen @Salty Belle got the lanolin rich soap formula tuned in, and the scent is right in the Barbershop neighborhood. Easy loading with the Pro Barber handle Jim @Jayaruh crafted from a piece of Cypress and fitted with a Sunrise knot. While visiting family over the recent holiday I noted my son was sporting a full face beard so I asked about the razor I'd passed to him. He knew where it was but just hasn't seen the need to shave, so he passed back the Schick. Being a J Type it gives good service. I swapped in a fresh blade half way through the shave and was rewarded with a very nice 3 pass DFS. Skipped the alum, splashed on a good hand full of vintage Old Spice, and rubbed in a pinch of USB. Besides bringing home the razor and Shulton decanter, I picked up a head cold from my travels. Time to get medicated so I can breathe while I sleep tonight. Hope I can smell my pillow in the morning.
    Good Shaves Y'all!

    Monday's December Decadence

Touched up my Dovo Master's with the Frank Lloyd Wright style etching, I paired with a big Simpson Polo 8. For the lather a mix of AoS tallow and AoS cream. The lather was just perfect, wet and very slick with cushion. I missed a spot or this would have been epic. This Dovo style with thumb notch is a pleasure to handle and it sounded like pulling apart velcro.

    Irritation A+ Closeness A Smoothness A+ Sharpness A

Razor: Dovo Master’s 6/8 full hollow
    Stop: Herold Russian Leather
    Brush: Simpson Polo 8
    Pre: Proraso
Soap: AoS tallow plus AoS cream
    AS: Speick AS
    Scent: Dior Cuir Cannage

I am not sure when the change took place. I had not bought any for a couple years at least. I had just read that there was a formula change, and that it was well improved.

The original was very soft. Nearly a Cream. This tub is much stiffer , close to Stirling or B&M. The original as I remember it blew up lather nearly instantly but was touchy with water. This tub made gloopy, shiny soft serve and seemed to handle a whole lot of water.

A tip when making "HOT" lather. Some soaps do well in intense heat, some do not. The lather when hot will look bubbly and too wet, it is not. When you apply it to your face and it cools it will become the proper consistency. It takes a little experimentation.

First you need to build up your forearms in the gym, then you need a big wide bowl, then you need some time. This is all worth it as it is an amazing brush and very decadent.

    Mike's Natural Soap - unscented
Thayers Lavender witch hazel and unrefined shea butter

I'm shooting (but not like @Douglas Carey ;)) for seven shaves on the Astra SP blade this week. Going unscented this morning as I'm spending time with my sweet kiddos at the hospital. I hope you all have as much fun as I will today.

    Happy Monday!

    Good photo and nice write-up!

I bought some of the Dollar Tree cologne that's their knockoff of Versace Blue Jeans. I love the scent. It's mild, and it doesn't seem to have staying power. In a way, that's sort of good...I don't want to be "that guy".
Recently, I was with my wife & my Mom at our pathetic little mall. While in Bon Ton I tried one of their sample bottles of a different Versace scent. She put her window down on the way home and cussed me. Welp....that's a money saver right there. At least I didn't drop (I think somewhere around) $50 for a scent that neither one of us liked! ;)

    Great photo and recap.

The Route 66 is certainly decadent.

    Some more Route 66 goodness.

The blade looks great with the etching.

    Great photo Charlie. Happy Monday.

Weekends are never long enough. It just doesn't seem right that Monday is here so soon. Thanks the kind gift from Adam @Drygulch , I get to start the week off with a product I have never tried. I have read so many positive comments about Jeeves soaps and being a fan of Bay Rum I was looking forward to giving it a go. Since the sample was huge, I decided to load it into an empty shave stick. Wetting my face down I rubbed on a good about of soap and set out face lathering with the Tres Amigos brush. The Envy White knot in this brush has tons of backbone and scrub with no scritch. The Jeeves was easy to lather and the Bay Rum scent was very nice with little to no cloves. While the scent strength was a little on the light side, it did last trough out the shave. The Jeeves soap was very slick with excellent post shave feel. Three passes, XTG, ATG and XTG, followed by touchups provided a near perfect shave. Overall excellent but not epic like yesterday's shave. A splash of Captain's Choice Bay Rum and I am ready for the day. I hope everyone has a great Monday.
