Monday December 4 - Coffee and Menthol Monday
    Gillette Black Beauty on 4 / Topaz Platinum ( 2 )
    Jason's non - 30DC Cypress Badger brush
Soapy Bathman Cup of Joe soap
Alum and Soapy Bathman Cup of Joe balm (menthol version)

I have been good and have faithfully tested mystery creams for FOUR WHOLE DAYS in a row, so today I changed everything. My Soapy Bathman order arrived late last week with not just balms but also a shave and a bath soap. I have been wanting to try the coffee-scented soap, so today I did. For this occasion, I traded my 30DC LE synthetic brush for a badger.

The results were - mixed. The soap is a tallow soap with shea butter and lanolin added but is very hard - almost like a European milled soap. I started to load on the puck super goop style, but quit once it looked like soap was well up in the knot and went to my lather dish. The resulting lather was too thin. Clearly I didn't load long enough to get enough product. Despite that, the shave was quite slick and the alum detected no irritation.

I then used the balm. Great face feel and wonderful coffee aroma -- and then the menthol kicked in...

I think the Soapy Bathman is a good soap; I just need to use it a bit more to get the lather dialled in. That will have to wait for awhile, however, as I am now returning to the regularly scheduled Mystery Cream Challenge.

Scots Pine is the only one I've rejected so far. Nothing wrong with it, I just have a sensitive nose for pine scent. I loved the mutton tallow effect, but the scent just didn't work for me. I drive my wife crazy because any cleaner with pine scent in it makes me complain.

Great. Now you have me thinking about Tabac vs. Stirling. Both are in my top few soaps and I have gone back on forth on which I may or may not prefer. Looks like another trial to add to my never-ending list. Not like I'm going to stop using either but my obsession over rankings demands answers for these kinds of things. It's a curse. :angry032:

Good review, John. I have yet to try Soapy Bathman soaps (which is somewhat odd since they are from BC), but did read somewhere that blooming is recommended because of the hardness. I don’t usually do that, but if the thin lather continues, you may want to try it.

That's great news. When the little one is sick, the entire house feels the pain.

Great review John. I can already guess you'll love this soap once you have it dialed in.

Interesting. I found the scent to be a bit muted. It was strong last night when I rehomed it into a new container but not as much this morning. The aftershave wasn't strong at all, but it's one of those tiny sample bottles. Nothing bad but I was expecting to be slapped in the face with the pine scent and wasn't.

The scent is definitely not overpowering. It's just.........pine. A very natural scent but still.........pine. And therein lies my problem.

Yep, you nailed it. I just need to break down and get a set of Ozark Mountain. It's such a nice scent. I'm enjoying the mutton formula though. That's some good stuff!

Good tip, Jason. I considered blooming it when I saw how hard the puck was but didn't just because I usually don't. I think I can get it to work if I treat it like MWF and load for "long enough" and then double that time. If that doesn't work though, then I will bloom it and see what happens. It's encouraging to see that the soap is slick enough to work even with rotten thin lather though -- that's usually the sign for me of a tallow soap that will be absolutely superb once I use it correctly.
