    Shavettes and Jeeves January!

    January 4

Razor - 1918 Gillette Old Style
    Blades - [IMG] (2)
    Pre-Shave - Stirling Mentholated Pre-Shave Soap
Soap - Jeeves of Hudson Street Bay Rum
Brush - Stirling 26mm Pro Handle Synthetic
    Post - Alum

A bit earlier shave than usual but it was my day off and I have an early appointment for my monthly med check before I go to work in the morning. With any luck I'll be in bed a bit earlier than usual. Normally that doesn't work, but we'll see.

I stayed with the centenarian razor today and switched the brush to the Stirling synthetic. I really like the feel of this brush. It's my biggest knot and makes for a quick load and lather. The 1918 performed flawlessly again with the Russian Swede. Two passes, DFS, and the alum was mostly quiet. I'm a very happy camper with that result.

I'm hoping to be able to switch some Jeeves soaps around in a few days. They are sending me some samples to try out and review. I let them know it was Jeeves January on here and they seemed quite happy for the notice. Thanks again to @Drygulch for spreading the Jeeves love around!

Which case does that one have? Mine is not a military case. It's a silver tone metal one.

I think frats have tamed down a LOT, for the most part. PC and university alcohol policies made it happen. I wouldn’t worry too much if my kid had joined one. It’s not like the old days. I was in one in the late eighties that would have made no parent proud.

I am really enjoying this week with the 30DC Boar and Cobra. The brush has worked so well with different soaps and is just a joy to use. The Cobra is smooth efficient razor with 3 passes and touch ups ending in consistent near perfect shaves. Since the snake will bite, it does require a light touch. A splash of Floid Blue and I am ready for the day. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

    Prep: Stirling mentholated pre-shave soap
    Blade: GEM stainless
    Razor: GEM G-Bar
    Brush: Omega 10049 boar
    Soap: Mitchell's Wool Fat
Post: Witch hazel, Fine American Blend aftershave
    WTG, touch up

Nice and easy and efficient. Really enjoyable shave with the Fat Friday software combination. The Fat has never let me down and I enjoy using it once a week. All came together quite nicely.

    Enjoy your Friday, everyone!

Friday. January 5 early morning - Jeeves and GAF

Delta Echo Ink black Gillette Slim on 4 / Voskhod ( 6)
    Simpsons CH2 Synthetic brush
    Jeeves Private Study soap
Alum and Jeeves Bay Rum splash

For Gillette Adjustable Friday I used the Slim loaded with a Voskhod. The Voskie was still smooth and sharp on its sixth use. Three passes and only a slight roughness at one spot under my chin keeps me from calling it a BBS. No complaints from Mr. Alum. This is quite a change from what my shaves were like a year ago -- they were getting pretty good after a couple months in the 30DC. But nowhere near this good. I couldn't go three passes without significant irritation and I still needed the styptic pencil on occasion.

The Soap Destroyer did an excellent job loading the Jeeves and then face lathering. I really like the Jeeves splashes too -- a pleasant mild menthol tingle followed by the feeling of well moisturized and tended skin.

I hope everyone is on track to have a good weekend.

I agree with you on the Jeeves splashes. Great quality stuff. Really like the skin feel and menthol. I have the Tobacco Bay Leaf and Black Tea scents and will likely get more at some point.

Amazing photo, Clint! The Cobra and 30DCLE are stunning! How much soap is left in that tub ? It's looking a little thin already!
Happy Fat Friday! I'm glad you are enjoying the G-Bar, Perry!

DEEP SHAVING QUESTION OF THE DAY

OK, let me pose a shaving "focus" question worthy discussion by the crew, with some background first. As you may know, my focus is on better learning my grain pattern and coming up with a shave routine that merges efficiency and ease (to include direction, number of passes, etc.). So, today I decided to repeat my previous accident of going ATG on the first pass, but do it with purpose. Voila. The one pass DFS+. (I did get a weeper out of it, though.) So with that said, here is my question:

Based on the above, it appears that the ATG pass is the most important and has the biggest effect on whisker reduction and my ultimate results. Traditional wisdom says the WTG and/or XTG passes prior to the ATG pass are important for "whisker reduction", to make the ATG pass more effective, however I always get a better shave after 2 days of growth when my whiskers are longer, so that seems to run counter to my understanding of the logic behind those passes. I'm trying to determine how many passes, which pass direction/s and which order is preferable, but feeling that the conventional wisdom of "whisker reduction" doesn't really adequately explain the reason/logic behind each pass, I'm wanting more in depth knowledge of the process. I'm hoping maybe those more learned than me have pondered this before and will have thoughts. Feel free to add your thoughts in the hopper, guys...

    Razor: English FB Tech
    Blade: Dorco STD-301 (1)
    Brush: Razorock Plissoft 22
    Cream: KMF fragrance-free
    Post: Alum, Listerine, WH

Following @wchnu's advice, I'm starting over with the Dollar Store Dorco STD-301. The FB Tech is a crackin' good razor and the combo with the STD-301 exhibited none of the issues that I had previously. Definitely the best shave so far this year and a BBS with no issues.

You know it's a good shaving day when your biggest complaint is with how the cream squirted out of the pump on the bottle. Let's just say it adds a new definition to the term "razor porn". :)

I think that the WTG before ATG is about removing the bulk of the whisker easily; ATG alone or as the first pass would have the additional drag of pulling against the additional whisker making for an uncomfortable experience.

The 1-day vs. 2-day growth is probably more about whisker thickness and flexibility. The shorter, new whiskers may be too flexible to cut and are really just being pushed out of the way by the razor. The older ones are big enough to actually be being cut.

Just a guess on my part.

He joined the frat last year and a room opened up at the frat house so he decided to move in. He assures us it won’t affect his studies. He says it’s a lot more quiet than his dorm floor.

I’ve met some of his frat members and they’re nice young men. I’m just a bit nervous because the frats at my Alma mater were notoriously rowdy. I never joined because of that. I was a GDI. The school shut them down a couple of years after I graduated because they got even worse. Of course this was back in the early 80s. So I’m just being an apprehensive parent.
