    Shavettes and Jeeves January!

January 19 - Jeeves Samples Day 2 - Fatboy Friday

    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (6)
    Blades - voskhod-teflon-coated.jpg (1)
Soap - Jeeves of Hudson Street Abyss
    Brush - 30 DC LE
    Post - Alum

Another day with the Jeeves of Hudson Street Abyss and - it's Fatboy Friday! Loaded a fresh Voskhod into the Fatty on 6, worked the Jeeves up with the 30 DC LE brush and had just a fine shave. Definitely rose scent in the Abyss. Subtle which is very nice. A couple of times during the shave I got a nice nose full of rose with the chocolate undertones, then it would fade, then another whiff.....very nice stuff. First rose scented soap I've used and I like the way it understates itself.

Two passes with the Fatboy and a little touch up to a near BBS and that's all I need. I'll stick with the Abyss one more day then move on. The other three samples I have are Turkish Bath, Private Study, and Velvet Jacket. Hope you have a great weekend!

With 12 days left to go in January the theme for February is still in flux. However - February is always special here. If you don't know why, you will soon enough! If you'd like to join in the special celebration, you might want to go over to the shop (theshavedenshop.com) and get some soap ordered. TSD products are high quality and awesome if you've never used them. Also, the money you spend there goes to support TSD and keep it running so the shenanigans never stop! It's not a requirement for you to buy some TSD soap - but it might add to your enjoyment of February if you do. Just a little birdie talking. ;)

I used a bar of shea enriched Black soap when I showered and thought I recalled Neal trying to shave with it. OK - experimental soap excursion. Wet the synthetic brush, shook it out as I would with shave soap, and loaded. Into the suribachi bowl and I got fluffy foamy lather. Applied to my face it dissipated quickly so I went brush to bar and skipped the bowl of foam. First pass WTG saw the "lather" again dissipate like an automatic tranny driver using Williams. An easy fix for many soap issues is Use More Product. Applying bar to face I rubbed the black soap on my remaining stubble and saw the soap leave a gray layer that looked like I'd been crawling under houses fixing frozen/broken water pipes. Applying brush to face and doing a rare face lather I was able to coax out a decent protective mix. AGT with the fresh Platinum blade gliding better, the brush well loaded and back for WTG still in ninth gear. I can't say I'd recommend using this particular soap to shave. The shea butter moisturizes well and this doesn't have plantain ash grit. It's a shower & bath soap so I'll use it as intended next time. I reached back in the cabinet and snagged a different decanter of Shulton Old Spice. Gave it a shake-shake in case any of the good stink had settled. It smells brighter that the standard bottle I've been slowly consuming. Good stink.
    Good Shaves Y'all!

Did a late night shave that wound up being a semi tribute to my Grandfather. '40s superspeed and the unmolested William's that resides in an early glass Shulton Old Spice mug. I deviated on blade and brush by going with the Sharp Star and Stirling Kong respectively, but I finished strong with a healthy splash of Skin Bracer. I see a lot of people saying things like "Why should I work so hard to get a decent lather with William's, when there are so many soaps that work better with less effort"? I personally don't have to put any more effort into William's than any other soap. Maybe it's because we have softer water here in North Georgia than in most of the country. I can get a nice lather in no time either in a bowl or directly on the face. The only complaint I have is a minor one, it's lacking some of the super slickness I get from some of the artisan soaps. That said, it still gives a good shave, and if it was the only soap available, it wouldn't be the end of the world for me. At any rate, I'm smooth and smelling like my Grandfather. All I need now is a drive to the package store in a 1965 Ford Galaxie to pick up a six pack of Pabst Blue Ribbon.

Interesting shave you had there. Using the refined bar gave you a better chance than I would have with my plantain ash filled preferred version but, yeah, doesn't seem to quite have what a good shave soap needs. Sounds like it's a soap that makes Williams look absolutely decadent! Nice try!

Next pair of razors in the finishing stone test are a W&B Gokuymo 20k and Gorge Wostenholm finished on Shapton glass 16k. This round produced a clear winner, the Wosty was both smoother and sharper. The Shapton is in the lead 3-2-1.

I have used that soap in the shower.....thought about trying a lather. Now I don't have to. Nice call on the auto tranny boys.

I am glad that the weekend has finally arrived. The Jeeves Bay Rum continues to impress with its performance and scent. Even though I was forced to set the knot higher than normal in this handle, the brush work very well. @jtspartan I think you might be right on the razor head. It does feel like a EJ 89 clone. Three passes and touch ups left me with a great drama free shave. A splash of Captain's Choice Bay Rum finished the shave off with style. This CC Bay Rum is just about gone. I do enjoy bay rum aftershaves so I will have to find a replacement or reorder this one. Maya and I are off to visit my Mom for the day. I hope everyone has a great Saturday.

We had our upstairs (leaking) furnace drain line repaired, but we couldn't get it thawed out. It's a poor design with a long 3/4" pipe run. The furnace was off long enough during the repair that it froze in our attic. (I love winter.) For a couple of days, we relied on our downstairs furnace to hold the upstairs at a toasty 65 F. We finally got the drain line thawed out yesterday. House is a toasty 73 F this morning.

Did I say that I love winter? :Animatedfrozensmily: Particularly when it misses Kentucky altogether snows in Georgia and Alabama! :happy097:
