I always have a stash of wooden cigar boxes in the house, because I find them useful and appealing to look at. (Ironic, since I can’t stand cigars, but that’s another matter.). I was thinking that if I knew some basic woodburning I could decorate and label them with something more interesting than paper labels. I am hoping for some advice on best equipment for beginners, where to buy it and any other tips you can offer.
You can get basic wood burning kits at JoAnns, Michaels, or A.C. Moores. I use one to brand some of my brush handles. You may remember this, too.
My wood burning happens only when I'm thinking too hard. Actually I don't have to be thinking hard, just thinking!
After a bit of research, I have learned that you can buy a pretty basic starter kit or a really expensive expert set-up, but there doesn’t seem to be anything in between the 2. So I went with what I thought was the best starter set- the one with a temperature dial. It came with a bunch of different tips (fine point, chisel, calligraphy, etc) and I bought a set of alphabet stamping tips. I’m starting to figure out the basics thanks to some experimentation and a lot of YouTube videos.
Mine only has one setting. I plug it in, turn it on and walk away and let it heat up. It is not fast at all, but it eventually gets hot enough to do the job.
