I would like that ten times if I could. Considering all the hotel shaves I do in a year, 2/3 of them at any rate, I use shavettes more than anything. Every straight I own is easier to use than any of the shavettes I use.

If English is OK, that's easy, too. The Q-Shave is your first Double Edge (DE) razor? Depending on your facial hair and skin type I would suggest beginning with a lower number setting. Adjust upward each shave until you find the razor is causing irritation.
One problem new wet shavers have is pressing the razor against the skin. That was necessary when shaving with a cartridge razor. Now you must learn to have a gentle hand. Hold the razor against your lathered face with the handle pointing straight out, away from your face. As you begin your stroke, tip the handle just until you feel or hear the blade cut beard hair. This is called "Riding The Cap". The safety bar may not even touch your face. This give the best angle of blade to cut hair, much like the angle used by straight razors.

Those two things 1) a light touch - no pressure, and 2) riding the cap - best angle should help to reduce your irritation. If you still have your previous razor it's OK to use it to get difficult areas. Soon you will find your hand trained to the new style.

Love this soap maker, thanks @wristwatchb (Charlie) for getting me in the know! This truly is my favorite outside artisan soap maker. Never had a bad day with Route 66. Two Kung fu strikes for the DFS . Heroic as always after cool Alum. Other than that...all is quiet in Colorado.

Neal, I've been watching with interest your reports on the Carbon Steel SE blades you've been using. I know you said the GEM Carbons were dragging right out of the gate for you and I'm just wondering about the blades you got.

First of all, the only SE blades I've tried are GEM-branded blades which I can buy locally at a locally-owned drug store in the shaving section. The GEM Blue Star (carbon steel) and the GEM by Personna stainless steel blade pictured here:


My personal preference is the stainless steel blades. For me they are smoother, and they last for more shaves than the carbon steel Blue Star blades. However, the Blue Star blades perform well enough for me during 4 or 5 shaves before I retire them. I also have to dry them off right away after shaving because they react to moisture quickly. I'm curious about the GEM carbons you tried because they didn't seem to be marked the same, i.e., no GEM stamped in the Blue Star (see photos):

The Blue Star carbon blade is on the left and the stainless is on the right....


I guess I'm wondering if GEM has more than one variety of carbon blades out there?
