Tinnitus?

Track by SubRanger caught my ear. I listen to almost all genres, and honestly, it's the sound engineering and the production that I listen to the most in music. That and the bass lines.

I did that Billie Jean thing, it went OK at a rehearsal with the pianist and guitar. Me and the guitar play the song, the piano voices what would be the lyrics. Still tweaking it, not ready for public use.

Now me and the pianist are getting our hands in some gear, and hope to record some instrumental stuff for science soon. Looking at a sequencer, sampler/tape loop, drum machines, and and sound board to run to my laptop. We wanna make spacey weird stuff that's loungy/danceable, but it will have musical structure and form. Get it? Maybe?

When things go awry, blame the tools. It's never about the operator.

 

This can be especially true in ones quest to be a musician causing the buying of unneeded gear. Probably the reason why I have so many basses.

 

Somehow, I escaped this. When I started music again, I asked my piano pro friend...

"what do I really need, based on what you see from your guitar/bass players?"

So, I bought:

Fender Bass
Fender Amp
Required cables and straps
Picks
Distortion pedal
Delay pedal
Effects station

Since that time, 15 months ago, I've only bought one set of strings, and only because I was an idiot and broke one.

I didn't go gear crazy. I do play rhythm guitar and the pedals are dual use.

I did take ~64 lessons with a degreed bass guitar teacher since the time I last bought anything directly for bass

What I learned:

Basses and effect chains only sound as good as the guy playing them.



That said, I am building a recording/mixing station now. But, that's actually a different activity and won't necessarily be me that I am recording.
