I recently found a old tub of portals shave cream in the green tub it has to be at least seven years old is it still usable?
It might be a little dried up, but it should be fine to use assuming that it doesn't smell rancid. You may want to let a little hot water sit on the top of the cream for a little while to rehydrate it a bit. And/or you may want to lightly scrape off a thin top layer before use. If it is a tallow-based cream, there's a possibility that it has gone rancid which you can tell just by scent. If that's the case, then do not use.
I have several creams that are older then that. Never have had one go bad. Give it a go. If it got a little tight load your brush right off the top of it.
I had to give away a bunch of creams which I know I'll never use. I even threw away six creams which had become rock-hard. I think those creams were from 2002.
Because creams contain water, they also have preservatives to help resist bacterial growth. No guarantees, but it's possible they are safe. Do a test on your forearm.
You know we live in a "hurry-up" world, when a shaving cream from 2002 is called "old". (or ""rock hard" to quote @Yehuda D)]
ABC cream will dessicate over time, but it remains just as good as when it was new, which is a thick cream in a tub. When it starts getting stiff, I usually take the lid off and let it make the transition in the fridge until I can lather on the soap. Eventually it will be as hard as a hard soap bit it's still fine. Cheers, Steve
I just ordered two "new" versions of old shave creams-2 Rise Superfoams. Old Rise is history, which is a shame, but this new version changed it around SOME, but not by 100%. I had a huge order soon after joining here. Great product, but it's scarce these days.
Glad to see I'm not the only user of vintage cans...I must confess that I've come close to picking up some vintage Colgate Lime cans on eBay. Me, I've got 7 cans of Barbasol Cool Menthol and two tubes of Real Shaving Co. Sensitive cream from 2008 or so and they're just fine. The fragrance has changed just a little with both products.
Gary,(@brit) I'm so delighted I'll be getting Rise again. Call me selfish, but I don't care much for the source I ordered them from-I just want the Rise!!!
I never got to try Rise, but Colgate was/is my favorite can ever. If you used both, how do they compare? There's a 2-can lot of Lime-flavoured Rise Super Foam on the Bay right now...
I just made an order with a company that appears similar to eBAY...2 Rise Superfoams(Oh, I guess I already mentioned the Rise order). . I liked Colgate very much as a much younger shaver. I think I used Colgate more often than the "Original" Rise. I recall I liked the Colgate varities that were available. Both were great classic male shave creams(course Rise SuperFoam is for both sexes, which I didn't realize until I began using it, but I thought....ahh, what the heck, it's great). Close comparison.
"Rock hard"....do you mean it's tough to get them out of the cans? That's what I'm now experiencing with those two Rises. I may throw THOSE out, even though when the Rise DOES eventually come out, you get the normal quality Rise shave. I'm close to deciding a cream that doesn't come out without a struggle is one I should flip.
