The Haul: February 2018

Great looking Plisson and hopefully the little one isn't smaller than an 18mm. I always like the smaller brushes!

 

No picture, but a very nice Nickel pre-War Tech head from a trade with @jimjo1031.

 

I think it is 18. I washed it and all the hairs are falling out. I have 3 brushes to reknot now.

Ooops, I think I left my Zippo pipe lighter behind in NY. I will have to order another or an insert, oh well...............

 

Yeah! It surprised me, too.

It's definitely a nice one, much nicer than the one I already had. That one has some seriously screwed up original plating. When I got it, the cap was so abused it looked like galvanized pipe. Several polishings later finally got me to a dull shine. Meanwhile the baseplate is actually missing chunks of plating. Still shaves great, but really makes me wonder about pre-War Gillette QA.

 

Matches. Why put petrol fumes on premium leaves?

 

Or it just could have been really abused.

 

Yeah, I think my GF is going to the store, but I think there is a pipe lighter insert for butane. Who knows, maybe.

 

Butane is great. I use matches or Bic.

 

Yeah but I don't like the cheap ones, they tend to overheat when lit long. I think the butane insert will be the best choice. I can put it into my NRA Zippo.

 

The reason matches are suggested is that they burn about 200° colder than butane or naphtha (zippo fuel). Heat is the enemy of Briar.

 

Ok, makes sense. Maybe I can find a nice carrying case for matches, or make one. I'm sure strike anywhere matches are still available here in NC. It's what I would like to get, if I can find them. If not, strike on box til I do.

 

Matches at home, butane on road, naphtha on never. You may find over time that refillable butane is more trouble than it's worth. Bics really do work, the overheating you have mentioned is not an issue; if it is, there's something wrong with your draw or moisture level. I can smoke a bowl in literally three matches.
