Kind of strange auction title. I never would have seen the razor in the second picture if I hadn't randomly thought that the hair clippers were kind of interesting. There was almost nothing about the razor in the description either. There was a close up picture of the blade. I hope it turns out to be alright. If it is in fair condition I think it will be worthwhile. If not, I guess I will have a practice restoration razor... Now I just need to figure out what the heck to do with those manual hair clippers.
Nah - looks like you got a deal. I'm trying to NOT add any more usable straight razors to my collection until I've at least tried one of the ones @DaltonGang honed for me.
Well, just do it. No excuses. Just start out with short strokes, and report back, after the bleeding stops.
I thought about that, but these 14-18 hour days are killing me. I may seem like I'm on here a lot, but that's because I get dead time between server work. Today was 13 network connections, plus a lot of driving around Houston for weird crap. I hate driving around Greenway and the Galleria.
Actually have a bit of a dilemma over this SR. I thought from the pic that it had rust at least on the tang under the scales but I now have it in hand and it is in (to my eyes) incredible condition. A little bit of dark patina on the blade but certainly no pitting. I just came across this thing as a fluke after @M14Shooter recommended I try a german blade. I feel like I am learning to drive in a collectable hot rod! All of that to ask a simple question: Should I put this in the hands of someone who appreciates it ("wow, you've got collector's piece there"), or am I just all starry eyed over my first razor ("get over it and shave, those things are a dime a dozen")? Remember, I was lurking in the Russian Razors forum when I joined up! I am much more about form than function, but certainly appreciate understated quality. This seems a little "bling" for my personality. Thoughts, opinions?
Just hone it up and shave. With the wear it has, its not a high dollar collector piece. So, prettify it, hone it, and shave.
Exactly what I was looking for. I just wanted to make sure someone who knows more than me wasn't going to be horrified when they discovered I had polished the blade etching off or something. From an aesthetic view point my dream razor has a simple horn or wood scale, straight (not fancy) bolsters and a plain square wedge blade. So this ain't it. I was still refining my tools and techniques a year after I started shaving with a DE, so I probably won't know what I functionally prefer in a SR for at least that long. It should be an interesting journey.
What are your plans for sharpening? 7 day sets could be cool to try different stones and see if you feel differences. I tried that with mine but I didn’t have the Coticules and Japanese stones at the time. I’m thinking it could be neat to go back and try something.
