Sure..Some Steel Can Handle a Very High Grit Edge..Some Steel Cant..Its Called Over Honing..Or What I Call Over Honing..If You Push a Sheffield to Say 17 K its Over the Cusp..Becomes Lethal..Not Smooth..This is Where Some Folks Fall Victim to High Grit Synthetics like the Shapton 30 K which is Actually a 20 K by Most Grit Ratings.. I Cant Make it Clearer than That..Sheffield Hollow Grinds in Particular & Some Softer Solingen Blades will NOT Handle Anything above a 16 K Edge or there About.. Billy..
Aye..Its Not Widely Understood this One in Forums in My Experience..Know You're Hones & Know You're Steel..I Call it.." KNOW YOU'RE GUNS & AMMO.. Billy..
Billy, what’s your opinion on the grit rating on the Shapton 12K? I have Kings in 1K, 4K, 6K and 8K. I just bought a Shapton 12K thinking I’d have a heckuva good progression. I sharpened two Dovos last night (my first time w/ razors), and was expecting the clouds to part and a ray of light to land on my razors. They really weren’t that good until a green Formax strop and leather strop. I didn’t bear down on the razors, and just let them ride with minimal weight to keep them level. For the 6K and up I kept the slurry thinned out to almost absent. Any thoughts?
i hone my Sheffields on synthetics up to 8k and then finish on a purple welsh slate.also do this on Solingen razors. i have tried go further but they dont seem to be able to hold a very fine edge for long.
My 2¢ worth. I have a King 1k, and have honed over 100 straights with it. It is super slow, painfully so. I didn't realize how slow, until I started using a Norton 1k. The speed and striations left by the King show me it's more of a 2k stone. I now use the King as such, and my bevel setting is much faster and precise than before. The Norton I bought was a combo stone, 280/1k. The 280 is used for correcting frowns, chips, dings, and minor cracks out of blades.
I Believe the Shapton 16 K is the Equivalent to a Naniwa 12 K Super Stone or there About...The Shapton 12 K is Between an 8 to 10 K I believe in Naniwa Grit Rating Terms...A Naniwa 12 K Super Stone is an Excellent Finisher.. Billy..
Thanks for opinions Billy. Looks like I chose poorly. I’ve got a Dan’s black surgical Arkansas heading my direction. Hopefully that cancels out the first mistake.
Aye..The Shapton Grit Rating has Caused Some Issues for Folks for Sometime if You look at Forums..They Just Use a Different Grit Rating is All..It Sorta Raises its Head when Folks Mix & Match their Progression..As a Rule of Thumb its Better to have a Complete Progression from ONE System Rather than Mixing & Matching from Various Systems..In My Books Anyway.. I Use a Complete Naniwa System to 12 K..Then Whatever Natural I Choose as My Finisher.. Billy..
I love my Dan’s Surgical Black . It came flat and did not need much prep to put it in service .Produces a smooth and keen 20 K Edge imho.I usually follow Billy's advise a put a 16K edge down on the Dan’s Arkie .Once you try an Arkie edge you will not look back .
So it looks like I need a Naniwa 1K and 12K. Where does the Dan’s translucent fall on the natural scale? Would it fill in the gap between a Naniwa 12K and Arkie Black?
Arkansas Translucent Stones are around the Same Finishing Capacity of Arkansas Black Stones..I Have Used Both..The Arkansas Black Maybe have an Edge on the Translucent..Maybe..Both are Around 20 K.. You Dont Need to Bridge Any Gap Between a 12 K & the Arkie..That Said..I Personally Use 1 Micron Alloy/Ox Lapping Film Before My Black Arkie..1 Micron Lapping Film = 16 K..I Like to Plonk Down a Higher Grit Edge on My Naturals..I Use Naturals Purely as Finishers.. Billy..
I have a Vintage Norton Translucent and I would rate the finish at about 18 K .A few K less than the black .I would assume the same for the Dan's .At this stage I would hold off on the Translucent and get a top notch Bevel setter like a Naniwa 1 K .
Well, I ordered a Naniwa 12K. The 2cm thick version. I’ll wait on the 1K Chosera until my Visa cools down.
My 1K Chosera is my favourite stone . 97 % of Honing is done at Bevel Set .It is the most import stone in the progression ,
