Yeah, what he said. The so-called BBS or baby bottom smooth (or Dolphin Smooth) shave is an invention of the modern shaving boards, along with the three-pass multiple lathering shave. "Back in the day" when everyone shaved with Gillette DEs or their rivals, the standard was usually "one and done", possibly with some cleanup buffing in a few areas. So the standard "excellent shave" was almost certainly what we now call a CCS (Close Comfortable Shave) or possibly the better DFS (Darn Fine Shave). Getting so smooth there isn't even a hint of stubble anywhere is frankly rather pointless since the stubble has reappeared as sandpaper in a few hours anyway, so you have given yourself the razorburn from all that extra skin exfoliation for nothing...

I usually do two passes and done for a DFS. It's good enough for any social purpose and I can achieve it every day without any irritation. My biggest takeaway from here was probably to shave to my comfort level and not to some mythical other person's ideal comfort level.

There's no restrictions about doing it, but you might want to keep the details to yourself. That's how Custom Titles happen. ;)
As you develop technique higher setting will possibly be more comfortable. For now if you can get a SAS (Socially Acceptable Shave) without irritation you're doing it right. Working up to a CCS (Close Comfortable Shave) is a goal that's attainable in 30 days. I hardly ever push for a DFS (Darn Fine Shave) and sometimes pay for it with a little irritation. Don't worry about those BBS (Baby Butt Smooth) shaves. Once you get your lather on track, figure out Cap Riding & skin stretching, get your beard mapped, and develop a mindless Zen technique - that's when The Baby shows up.

That right there - This is about Beard Reduction. Don't try to get it all because it's growing back anyways.

Good advice. I don't see myself as someone going more than 2 passes.

I am running way behind today. The good news is my wife is home. Of course, that meant I spent the morning cleaning up and getting everything looking like I actually had everything under control with the three younger ones. It's been a busy day. I got a quick one pass CCS in today before heading to church. This new AS called for some Bay Rum, so the Jeeves sample provided by @Drygulch answered the call. Set up for a nice shave. I hope everyone has a great day!

    Thanks, Clint!

The winter just seems long since February. Prior to that it wasn't much of one. Seems like every couple of weeks we get some storm which brings significant enough snowfall which requires some digging out. If it were just my place I wouldn't care, but then I have to get to mom's place and dig her out too. It's getting tiresome.

Wise decision, James! That's exactly what I do too now.... took me a while to get to that choice, and sometimes I forget and stand too close to the edge of the cliff.

    Pre-shave: hot shower
    Brush: Barburys synthetic
    Soap: Arko
    Razor: Schick E3
    Blade: Schick (1)
Post-shave: Dickinson's Enhanced WH, Nivea Men Sensitive PS Balm, Pinaud Clubman Musk AS / Cologne

Late afternoon shave today.... not logical to shower and shave before I have to shovel snow out at mom's place. The sun was out today and the temp up to mid-30s so that helps immensely. Keeping fingers crossed this is the last major winter storm for the season....

The Arko lathered well, but I don't need to tell you that. I picked up the E3 for today's shave. It already had a blade in it, but I don't know how many uses it had so I tried it. Right away I had tugging as I swiped it down my right cheek. I also saw that it was not even cutting off all of the whiskers since so many remained. I retired that blade and loaded a new one. That made a big difference. I did 2 easy passes with some clean-up on my stubborn neck areas and ended up with a CCS.

The Dickinson's Enhanced WH is the 2nd use in a row for me. I saw this at either Walmart or Target some time ago and bought it. Finally decided to try it. It feels very good. I'd compare it to the Thayer's WH I have.

    Happy shaves everyone!

Hi, and welcome. Try five. The mild razor is causing you to add pressure subconsciously, in an effort to make if cut like a cart. Also, always keep the cap of the razor in contact with the face while shaving. This will keep the blade attach angle low, and help reduce the irritation.

Chris originally created this little happy corner of the Den. When he gives advice, he generally has at least a vague idea of what he's talking about, so most of us find that if we follow it, things work out well. ;) Even when the advice seems counterintuitive as now: To get less razorburn, use a more aggressive razor... On the surface, that's weird, but it does actually work.

Thank you, Clint! It is a pretty nice scent. A different Bay Rum than the Atomic Age, so it has a just a touch of clove to it. The leather doesn't come out in the bottle, at least to my nose. But, on the face it pops a bit. It is a pleasant combination. The leather fades more than the Bay Rum AS the day goes.
