I'm a noob so take this FWIW. You're basically doing what I was doing before I joined the 30DC, changing setups with every shave. I was getting no where fast. Consistency will create consistency. Good luck!

I eschewed a full shave this morning in favor of a few extra minutes of sleep before church. I quickly whipped up some TOOBS Eton College and did one quick but effective pass with the MMOC. Not my smoothest shave ever, but no one knew the difference. That's one bonus of light colored (mostly white) facial hair.

If I had only Arko and Barbasol for time eternal, I'd be alright with it! As soon as you remind to send you an mmoc, I will. ;)

I appreciate the sage advice. That's what brought me here, I started a 30 day rule, my ADD only allowed me to go about 20. I learned a lot and could great shaves with a lot of my sets up, but what fun is that. For example, after the rule I could get great shaves with my DE89, my NDC Super Speed and Flairtip Super Speed. Then I got a 6 C, the increased weight and bulky head took some getting used to, but I discovered how to get a good shave with the 4 plate. Then I bought a Karve and started experimenting with this new razor, trying to get it figured out.
My face has an indented triangle under my chin, which is really difficult to shave with a mild razor, so I have tendency to over shave it, my OCD, won't allow me to leave well enough alone. Just below that the hairs grow parallel to the skin, and can only be shaved loose, if you stretch the skin you can't cut them. If I was smart, I would just stick with the C plate, a Rapira and be done with it. I think I will try try the C plate for a week or so in row, to really try to dial it in. Sorry for the long post.

He is right, the mini rule I did helped tremendously, I could benefit from an even longer rule. My largest issues now are anatomical, and hair pattern issues. People get an incomplete picture of my progress because seldom post about the great shaves, I only bitch about the ones where I have issues, it's part of my learning process. Once I get a razor figured out I use it for a week or so with good results and then move on to the next. For example, I got 6C figured out, used it for a week with good results and moved on to the next.

I'm going to break my rule for the month with a different razor. I'll put it away for Mayhem and break it back out for June.

Finished off the shave I started this morning. In a jarring act of juxtaposition I paired up my least expensive soap and my most expensive (at least it would be if I had paid retail) razor.

    Arko
    Omega boar
Joris 24K plated open comb razor with Thuja wood handle
    Astra SP blade
    English Leather AS

The Omega is well broken in now. It's a bit on the floppy side with little to no backbone to speak of, but still did a darn good job of lathering the Arko, which gave its usual stellar, hefty bang for buck performance. The Joris is a super nice razor with some heft to it. It makes me feel fancy, especially since I only paid about 1/10 of its new cost in a local antique store.

And I don't care what anyone says, I love me some English Leather after a good Arko shave. Going to bed smooth and relaxed.

...so, I haven't shaved since the last time I shaved and posted.

Here's what's been up with me.

Some of you may have seen my post about my friend and musical jam partner. I've been trying to help his parents get access to all the things needed while he's in the hospital. We are all doubting that his life will ever be the same as it was. I fear he has had his first schizophrenic break with reality. He's 32. It's not good. His parents live 600 miles away, and he's a bit of a loner. I've promised his parents that I will watch over and keep them informed, and that when he's released they can count in my help in making whatever plan we gotta make. At this point, he's so drugged it's unclear what's going on other than crazy paranoia and anxiety, and all the acting out that comes with that.

He's been really struggling, and may be in the hospital for for a little while. I've visited him this week whenever permitted. Today, for the first time in a week, he connected with reality. As I sat in front of him this afternoon, he was finally able to have a coherent conversation. It was really hard to keep a stiff upper lip today.

Watching someone's twist in the wind like that hurts. My heart breaks a little bit when I think about how scared, anxious, agitated, confused, and angry he must be right now. I hurt inside because I wish could make it better for my friend, and I can't.

But for the grace of God go I. I mean that.

This doesn't have a point. I've had some struggles in my personal life in the last year that have tested me. Lately, one over-riding thought.... Be grateful for whatever you have. You think you got trouble? If you're not locked in a secure facility, blown into orbit with Haldol... You still have chance to be OK on your own. You think life sucks now? Add "is on fire", "paralyzed", or "terminal" to the mix. Things can always be far, far worse than they are now.

Soon, I'll be back as much as I really want to be. I miss being on TSD. You guys are alright! ;)

Now somebody else post something so we can move on....

You don't see too many of them around. I just checked the bay and found one on there in a travel kit. I believe they were produced in the mid to late 1980's and the fact that they aren't all that common now would lead me to think they weren't a commonly bought a used razor by the "proletariat". They also made the "Ideal" razor, which has a plastic handle and looks a lot like the Gillette Black Beauty. I haven't gotten one of those yet but it's on my wish list. You see a lot more of those than the Consul, so logic would suggest they were more popular.

When you look at the other Russian razors during that era you see a lot more plastic and wonky designs than you do the quality of the Consul. You also run into the "Soyuz 1" style razors that are just hard to deal with. Uneven gaps, cheaper metal, you know, the whole Russian engineering thing.

I was surprised when I first tried the Consul and found it to be actually quite good. Even the Mladast razor, which looks like an adjustable but isn't, isn't a smooth and great razor, though it's better than the "Soyuz 1". I expected the Consul to have any number of issues from uneven edges to wonky blade locking to every other nightmare you could imagine. So far, though, every shave with it has been a really good shave. Plus, it's about 3 notches more aggressive than the Gillette Slim. 6 on the Consul is about the 9 on the Slim, and 9 on the Consul is up in Futur territory.

You're doing a great thing there buddy. Hang in there and you know how to find me if you need a venting spot. Now, on to "post something else".....you just nailed the musical selection of the night. Marley. Three Little Birds. Doesn't get much better than that.

Aggressive razors allow the skills to be used to their full potential. You don't realize it, but we're teaching how to shave with a straight, whether you choose that path or not. All of our advice is generalized and mostly assumes open blade. You'll love the gap on that razor. It's what riding the cap is all about. It puts even the most "aggressive" DE heads into an SR-like attack angle at the skin level. All razors, regardless of type, are just handles to hold a blade, with whatever level of safety features the user desires. They can all cut skin, and they all will cause irritation if used at a high and scraping angle.
