    THAT.

That black and green device is what I used back in the dark times of blood and ruined shirt collars. Of course now I know the horror was b/c I used the wife's hair conditioner for shaving cream, but I blamed the razor. Should try them again for old times' sake.

It's definitely a smell of the 70's for sure. The modern stuff is missing something unexplainable in the scent. I distinctly remember Old Spice and Old Spice Lime as a small kid in the late 1970's. The modern Old Spice versions have about 70% of the scent, but seem to be missing some kind of signature 'something' that is ONLY in the old vintage stuff. Some people today who didn't grow up back then might try to say, "nah you're just smelling the 'age' on the fragrance". Nope, I assure you that I remember the smell and it definitely was different. I can't for the life of me explain what it might be that makes it smell different, but it's definitely different today than it was back then. Something in the base. Maybe it's a different preservative? Maybe it's a different stabilizing agent? I don't know but something is different in the scent that for me makes it a signature 70's vibe I remember from the same period as the Bee Gees and disco. I smell the same kind of difference in the classic aftershaves and colognes like Polo and others.

I did NOT care for the BG's falsetto voices. Were they tryinta clone the Beach Boys er sumethin? Anyway, back to shaving, excellent points here. What you said about the modern Old Spice scent being only about 70% of the classic vintage version is akin to what I've always said about Rise. Today's "Super Foam" isn't quite what I recall from the Rise of BG's years. It's in writing that their "Cooling A.S. Balm" brings it a bit closer-well, how about 100% closer? My theory is that the reason most organ music at baseball games is fake is along the same line. "That was then, this is now". But does it HAVE to be that way "now"? P.S. Can we imagine :How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" in falsetto?

    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (9)
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
Soap - Jeeves of Hudson Street Bay Rum
    Brush - Jayaruh #46
    Post- Alum

After last night's surprisingly not bad shave with the Curley I knew I had to give it a good trial. I expected to toss this one after the first use (or in the middle of it) but, to my surprise, it wasn't bad. Wasn't great either but, you know, it worked. I opened up the Fatboy to my namesake setting, grabbed the JR46 and loaded up with Jeeves Bay Rum. Got a great thick and slick lather and went to work. Two passes, some touch up, DFS is the finish and the alum was, like last nighy, just a bit hot in areas. Again, a not bad result, though I would have to say the feel during the shave was improved over last night. Smooth and quite effective in the wide open Fatty. Can't complain at all.

I'll give it one more shot tomorrow to see how it makes it through 3 shaves. Like @John Ruschmeyer said earlier, it's a bit maddening because it isn't a "WOW" blade, nor is it horrid. You really wish it wasn't just so......so.........Derbyish. You know.......ordinary. But you can't argue with the finish.

This is a stunning razor and is nicely balanced.
The blade is held very securely and thanks to the clever design blade exposure will always be even.
It's early days but I think this would be a bit mild as a daily driver as I had to go over the wiry grey hairs quite a few times.
Three passes and pick ups to get me where the 1924 got me in one and a half yesterday.
It is very nimble and a pleasure to use and did I say it was stunning?

For some reason this tune pops into my head every time I think of this razor:

I started off with Proraso Pre Shave. The Valobra Shaving Soap face-lathered well with the Jayaruh #274 boar brush. I did two passes with the Gem 1907 Lather Catcher Razor with an Original Gem Cutlery SE blade and ended up with a close, comfortable shave. After a cold water rinse, I finished off with Thayer's Lemon WH and then Granddad's AS. I am clean, smooth, and refreshed...

Superb bounce back shave. I dialed the Vision down for comfort and one pass on my neck with excellent results. I opened it up more for my cheeks to get a little closer. My face looks and feels great.
