clearly a Shavey nominee! The Academy is pondering which category/categories it should be nominated in.

First use of a straight since February. Just touched it up, and got an amazing four pass shave. This is why I like straights so much.

    MAYhem 2018!!!!!

    May 6

    Razor - 1959 (E4) Gillette Fatboy (9)
    Blade - [IMG] (3)
    Soap - Soap Commander Courage
Brush - Stirling Two Band Synthetic
    Post- Alum, Styptic

Third shave on the Curley blade and I just left the Fatboy on 9. It was a better shave on 9 than 6, so no reason to go backwards any. Soap Commander for the lather with the Stirling brush and it was as slick and fine as ever. No issues there.

I noticed an immediate difference from yesterday's shave. That incremental loss of smoothness showed its hand early in the first pass. It wasn't horrible, just not as smooth as yesterday. From being an ok shave to a shave that you know isn't going to get any better. First pass WTG wasn't too bad and still pretty effective. On the XTG pass I found myself working harder on my neck to get it to work up to par. And, when you work harder you generally add a little pressure and that was enough to nick myself. I'm putting that blood right on the blade. Yes, I added pressure, but the failing blade created the need. That buck is passed.

Alum was warming up this shave all over and the styptic on the nick gave the final burn effect. The finish is still DFS, but nowhere near BBS. I'd say this blade is good for two shaves, three if you need it, but I wouldn't push it any further than that.

My final take on the blade for this trial - definitely a surprise since it didn't just SUCK. That's a positive for any Chinese blade. If it had stayed consistent on this shave from yesterday's shave I might have even raved a bit. Don't know many, if any, Chinese blades that can go three shaves, especially consistently. The Curley had the chance but just isn't up to the task. So, a pretty average "C" grade for this one. Use it once or twice and you can get a very nice shave. Beyond that, and I fear it will just get worse, and accelerate the process.

    Osage Rub - Get some!

Need you ask Adam? OK, so I've been working several new to me samples of Stirling shave soap. Jared @PickledNorthern had a shipment sent to me from the Stirling folks so I could try Glastonbury. I think that's where the sample of bath soap came from.
glacial-lemon-chill-bath-soap-stirling_740x.jpg Yup, it's got menthol in it! I'll spare the details, but will share this - it was OK in the shower. I wouldn't want to be sitting in a tub full of soapy bath water.

as long as you keep it on your head, you can just enjoy the chill. Don’t get nuts with it though.

I hadn’t read all the other comments when I posted this. It was well covered by others. It still should be repeated.

MAYhem Just me and my Piccolo

    Proraso Green preshave soap
    Stirling Port Au Prince sample
    B-400 brush - O'Pro 98 boar knot
    Suribachi bowl and cool water
Fatip Piccolo, Kai blade ( 2nd use)
    Osage Rub, M&L Florida Water
SOTD 05062018.gif Getting my menthol on! I am enjoying the extra added cooling from the Proraso Green PS soap. Don't know if there's any added slickness. Science will tell if I go to the trouble to do a well thought out side by side shave. Using a Sheep Fat based soap is already darn slick so it's all good. Second use of the Kai blade in the same ole DE netted an error free DFS. I skipped the alum, went in for a handful of carefully applied Osage Rub. Before it had a chance to dry I topped it with Florida Water.
    Good Shaves Y'all!
