I started this brush yesterday by gluing up four different woods: locust wood for the top and bottom, walnut, mahogany, and an unidentified light wood for the middle. Today, I worked on it. First, I cleaned up the edges. Then, I cut off the corners to make an octagon. Then I put it on the lathe and gave it shape. Next, I made the knot hole. Here it is, almost finished. I have put a synthetic horse in it for the picture. I think that might be just the right knot for this handle. Next, I branded the bottom with JR 287 and finished it with polycrylic.
Thanks, Jim. I think this one is going to be a keeper. Maybe it will show up in next weeks SOTD pictures.
I'm very curious...Is Mr. Penguin in fact brush for applying lather or is for another purpose, like duster or something?
Most likely a clothing or crumb brush, but there are limited options on google for penguin shaving brush.
Great looking brush, Jim. You are very talented. I just used my Jayaruh (259) this morning with B &M Seville and whipped up a ton of lather. My brush has the same type of knot as your new creation but not as big. I'm a big fan of your brushes - mine gets a lot of use.
It's a clothing brush. Either 1930s or 1950s, I can't remember. Edit: quick internet search ... some have them from the 1920s others listed as 1940s. /shrug.
