Soapy Science, Doc’s Special Blend
My tub of Soapy Science turned up this week while I was on the road. After reading all the reviews, I really wanted to put it through a serious test, to see if it’s really a good soap, or if everyone was just being nice to a junior high school girl. I’ve got news for you: Even after one shave, I can tell you that it’s good soap.
The tubs are big and easy to use. The scent of the Doc’s Blend is minty, and spicy, with citrus. It was powerful enough stand up and be noticed while making lather.
The soap is harder than artisan soaps I’m used to. I weighed the tub before I started, and after I had what I determined to be a power load, I had only used 1.2 grams in the big boar. It gave me enough super goopy, shiny lather to do three passes:
It was getting thin by the third pass. I’m not blaming the soap at all. For the small amount I loaded, it made a very large amount of lather, that held up well for the first two passes. If there was a shortfall, it was from me needing to load more soap.
The cool part, is that I really pushed its upper limit with the water, and know how slick this stuff can get. It’s slick. Right up there with top tier soaps. I took four days growth off with a DE, which is my least favorite choice for a heavy shave, and it was comfortable as could be. I did zero prep, just really worked the soap into my beard with the boar. Residual was great, and even on the thin last pass, plenty slick.
I didn’t rinse my face until I had put everything away, then rinsed with cold water, and skipped aftershave. Post shave was really good. Again, right up there with my favorites.
Today, I am going to use it again and make sure I get a really heavy load. If this soap can hold a stable super goop, the kid has a serious winner.
