One more Lather Catcher to get into the mix. I bought a pair of the 1914 Ever Ready razors late last year and haven't given them a try yet. Since they're identical, I just chose the one that was in slightly better condition, though they are both well preserved. Moved the Treet carbon blade over from the Kampfe, used the LE brush with Soap Commander for a great lather, and gave this razor a try.
The 1914 is a more compact razor than the Gem Junior or Kampfe, and Wait's Compendium even speaks of the "vestigial" lather catcher that is featured in this razor. IT definitely has less of a "scoop" on it, and the blade loads simply. Open the top cap, secure the blade on the blade stops and close the cap. Ready to go. Didn't take them long to start simplifying things as they continued to try and improve on design back then.
My first pass was very smooth and nice except for one bite on my right jawline. Didn't feel it, just saw the blood after the pass. I put a moment's pressure on it and it closed right up. Not sure what happened but it wasn't anything to worry about. The XTG pass went extremely well. This razor is quite nimble and easy to get and keep angle on. Very effective, though a lot quieter than the older LC's. Missed the feedback.
Touchups after two passes landed a near-BBS. Extremely nice shave that solidifies my respect for this style of razor. I also have a Gem 1912 that is similar and have used it before so know it's a great shaver as well. So, in my collection of SE razors I have the Gem 1912, Ever Ready 1914, and OCMM that all suite me just fine. If I add the Gem Junior and perhaps the Kampfe, I'll have four or five awesome vintage SE razors ready and waiting at my command. Good thing I'm immune to any of the AD's and ignore all attempts at enabling. Otherwise I might be in trouble!
Here's to a great week ahead of the holiday next weekend!
