Thanks, the minimalist approach is mostly because I can't stand perfumed products, even the soap is slightly perfumed, but that solves itself once it's been open for a month (I pre-open it to get rid of the smell) The soap is the only soap you can get here, rest is all spray-can stuff, which I can't stand either (perfume/alcohol). This is the 2nd tablet I'm using and even have one in stock. I manage to do about 9 months with a soap tablet and I really like the result, especially with the technique I'm now learning. Shave, take a shower, done. (No cartridge or electric shaver can beat it, even while it's nowhere near perfect) The Matador has been sent out, The Slim Adjustable and Panthenon have been shipped yesterday, so at the moment the Slim Twist is my only razor.
Very pleased with my shave today. The menthol feel from the Chiseled Face was just right....not FREEZING, not "Hey, where's the menthol?". I think I'm going to put CF to a SERIOUS test..that is, try it on a hot humid day. There's just enough menthol in it to make it comfortable, I believe.
May 27, 2018 Razor: Gillette Sterling Tech Blade: 7 O'Clock Permasharp Stainless (3) Brush: Razorock Plissoft 22 Soap: Marvy Post: Listerine, WH I had planned to do a long writeup about today's shave and the return of an old MAYhem favorite, Marvy soap, but that will have to wait until tomorrow. Because of an interruption, I ended up having to cut today's shave short to a single pass for a CCS. I will say a couple of things, though... Moving from an English FB Tech to a Sterling Tech can be a bit jarring. The FB Tech is a solid piece with a thicker and heavier baseplate than its US counterpart while the Sterling is the epitome of cost reduction though use of thin and light materials. It's still a Tech, but requires a different touch. Also, @Linuxguile, I'm really liking this blade; I almost bought a sample of the 7 O'Clock Super Platinum (Indian Black) last night to see how they compare.
They are both top tier blades to me. The Super Platinum is double the price of the Permasharp Stainless, but honestly doesn't double the performance (how could it?).
May 22nd PAL Injectomatic First Canadian Maximo Gomez SS Omega ‘49/ Walnut Thayers Chatillon Lux Bon Vivant AS I got this Injectomatic last year at a local 2nd hand store. It came cased with the injector cartridge in the picture. It had a few carbon (and I assume, given the gunmetal look) steel blades in it, but I hadn’t tried shaving with them. No brand name, but had Made in England and a Patent #. Looked up the patent and eventually found that it was the original American Safety Razor Co patent from 1951. I guess there is a good chance that the cartridge is, if not original to the razor, definitely from the same time period. I have another vintage PAL Injector cartridge from @Screwtape, but this one is older. Loaded up the PAL...and it was awful. Tuggy and dull feeling. Got through one pass on two days growth, chucked the blade and had 2 very nice passes with a Chick. The good news is that it doesn’t get any better than this soap and AS, the bad news is I don’t think I’ll want to use these vintage carbons any more. Have a great day all!
Ok- I feel the same way about the NEWs, at least of the Gillette’s that I have. Of your collection of modern DE’s, which do you feel is closest in feel and performance to NEWs? In other words, if someone loved the NEWs, which modern DE would you recommend?
Have fun at Grad. We have a similar sized grad class here in town and use the Hockey arena. Love the Omega knots, especially when they aren’t in an Omega handle!
