Honestly, just talking again about 3 Band Silvertip, and just about the knots, I personally would recommend Thater over Simpson. They are SO close in performance, and Thater is more affordable.

I feel like Simpson shines in the dollar/performance arena with Best hair. The Classic 2 (aka Chubby 1.5) is one of the coolest brushes I’ve ever used, when it comes to scrub. I got super lucky, and the one I have is just fantastical soft. A Duke 3 or Chubby 2 in Best would also be really good choices.

Thank you, Jason. Who ever would have thought that eighteen years could fly by? An afternoon flies by. A meeting flies by. Two decades? Holy crap.

First thing I thought of was that nobody’s on the lakes. My wife’s a nurse, so we don’t have normal weekends together anyway.

Only 200 posts later and now I'm caught up. Since I've not been creating razors lately , I've been kicking it with some of the budget soaps and AS. Here are my last few shaves since I last posted. Hope everyone had a great weekend (long weekend ) for others .

Randy, if you had cut individual letters out for the labels I would consider that serial but since you didnt I'm voting for normal on this one. That is a very nice display btw . Well done !

Wolfman SS WR1 OC .61 Blade Gap
    Feather
    Shavemac D01 3 Band
    Soapy Science Lollipop Citrus
    Folsom & Co Capri

With @PickledNorthern and @Linuxguile talking about badger brush, backbone, 2 bands and 3 bands, I decided to break out the Shavemac D01 #3 band, a brush that does not fit into preconceived boxes or perceptions. Yes it is a 3 band but is anything but soft and pillowy. I bought this brush used on TSN from someone that could not handle the backbone, scritch and scrub. I used this brush off and on and did not really like it at all until I had used it 50 times or so. Then the scritch came down to a level I could enjoy. Now I would classify this D01 3 band to have a medium high backbone. Certainly more than a TGN finest but not anywhere near the level of the D01 2 band.

I decided to take my original Wolfman SS OC out and give it a run as a way of comparing it with the Wolfman Ti OC. The biggest difference between the two is the blade gap. The .61 blade gap has the blade feel of a Slim on 5 with the efficiency of a Slim on 9 while the .74 blade gap has a blade feel of a Slim on 7 and the efficiency greater than the Slim can offer. I find the .61 blade gap to be more forgiving on angle and the smoother of the two.

The D01 3 band loaded and lathered the Lollipop Citrus easily. The scent of the soap is great while providing excellent slickness. I decided to stick with my modified 2 pass routine. My first pass was ATG followed by a XTG pass. I did have a little more buffing and touch ups with the reduced blade gap but the resulting shave was a touch smoother. The end result was an Epic BBS shave. A splash of F&C Capri finished off the bottle. It is a shame that is no longer available. I hope everyone has a great Memorial Day.

    May 28, 2018 - Memorial Day

    Razor: 1918 Gillette Old Type
    Blade: Derby Premium (2)
    Brush: VdH Boar
    Soap: Williams
    Post: Alum, Listerine, WH

It's Memorial Day when many of us take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice as we shave with our vintage military razors. Like Neal and many others, I chose a 1918 Gillette OT. I really don't know anything about the history of this particular razor other than it came to me as part of a small bundle along with two Micromatics and a post-WWII Tech. It has a G-series serial number but not a "Property of US Army" stamp and is in surprisingly good condition other than some darkening on the handle which, I suspect, is from a handle repair. The bottom line is that I don't know if it was ever part of a Khaki or Service Set or saw any action beyond the homefront. Either way, it still seems appropriate for the day...

I have to give a lot of props to the men who shaved with these razors, particularly under battlefront conditions. Perhaps the thicker blades of the day give a different feel to the razor, but a Thin-Cap OT is not my most comfortable razor. (I think it pokes my chubby cheeks a bit.) Nevertheless, I can't fault the results.

    A couple of random thoughts...
    1) I think I'd like to find a Khaki or Service set case for this razor.
    2) The first sentence of this post was surprisingly hard to get right. I almost said "take a moment to remember those who made the ultimate sacrifice by shaving with a vintage military razor". Not quite what I intended.
    3) It's raining here in NJ so we had one "good" day for the three-day weekend. Tomorrow's papers will lament that fact and the impact on shore businesses.
