You see so many guys on YouTube who do shaving videos, and they shave over the same spots time and again... No wonder new shavers end up with irritation if they copy these guys! This was a big thing for me - don't shave where there is no lather (even if my soap is slick)!

You're so right. I watched a bunch of videos on youtube and they do go over the same areas over and over. One of the main reasons I thought it was ok to do the same. Nothing like a little blood to teach you different. ;)

I learned by ending up with loads of spots and ingrown hairs... Thanks YouTube! :angry019::prrr:

Ouch! Thought that would explain why I've been getting a few bumps due to ingrown hairs since I started DE shaving. Not a lot by any means but more than before. That's a really good tip though...Hopefully now I'll get a lot less to none!

One of the best tips I ever got was:. "Soap is cheap, so no need to be stingy with it." I used to pride myself on using just the tiniest dab of cream in the bowl or on the brush to make my lathers or on loading my brush with just a half dozen swirls or so in the soap tub. My lathers improved greatly when I started loading heavy instead. And when I started to have tons of lather left over, the temptation to shave over areas without relathering mostly disappeared too.

This was a big moment for me too... Getting back to bowl lathering with the TOBS, using plenty of cream and hydrating it properly were game changers. All thanks to you guys on this thread!

No I don't have a MMOC. I tried one. I did own a Rocnel SE-G modern gem razor that was as aggressive or even more. Most of my modern razors are on the aggressive side with the exception of the OneBlade.

I've been looking for a simple razor stand for my small razor collection. Several Amazon reviewers rated this test tube rack highly for both DE razor and fountain pen storage. I picked up three - two for my razors and one for my inked fountain pens. They're inexpensive at $13 each, and they look decent enough to sit on a sink, shelf, desk, etc. I'll post some photos once I get them loaded up. They're manufactured by Eisco Labs if you're interested.

This is a test tube rack, so it won't count against NB 18.

Not checking in for 24 hours makes for tough sledding to catch up on this thread! Ergo, the Shavette-Fu multiquote:

Thanks guys (and too all others who commented who I missed thanking).

In my opinion, the only brush you really need to worry about using a back-and-forth motion on is a horse hair brush. They can tangle really badly if you use a circular motion. I don’t worry about shortening the lifespan of a brush by lathering any more than I worry about shortening the lifespan of a TV by turning it on. When you use things, their life span is shortened. Having said that your brushes will last a whole lot longer than your TV.

35mm knot??? Do you need two hands to use it? Gives the “hold my beer” mantra a whole new meaning.

I’ve been seeing how sweet that knot looked in that handle and hearing you talk about it enough that when I saw another one on sale at a “seconds” price this week at Stirling I snapped it up. I don’t have any fan knots and have started to gravitate to larger bulb knots (which fans emulate) in the last year, so I may end up following suit and putting it in a handle if I like it.

That was me, and it’s a smell that only some people can pick up. Unfortunately I’m one of the lucky ones who can. I’m number of other folks on this and other shave forums have PM’d me to say they pick up on it too, but were told they were nuts. We’ve already established that I’m nuts, so I have no problem talking about any of this publicly.

WARNING: @clint64 is a serious brush enabler. He and @Douglas Carey already enticed me to pick up one of these mixed hair brushes this week. Admittedly, I am a soft target for brush purchases… and soap purchases… and razor purchases… oh never mind.

After successfully learning to Fly Fish from a couple of world class fishermen on YouTube, I was completely convinced that you could learn anything up to brain surgery there. Recently I learned you’ve got to be careful who the teacher is. Some of them are lobotomists.

It has taken me a long time to come to terms with this, but there is no such thing as “too much soap” for a good lather. May be a one day using the strategy I will spot a ring of death and one of my tubs. Probably not.

I use a similar wood testtube rack for my razor rotation, except mine holds a double row. Works very well.

I forgot to post my shave this morning...

    Wednesday morning September 19

PAL Adjustable injector on Low / vintage Schick Super Chromium (who knows how many)
APShaveCo U-Brush with 24mm SynBad fan knot
    Hendrix Classics Barbershop soap sample
    Jeeves Bay Rum splash

This sample is slowly disappearing from the bottom of the mug. I think I might get all the way to the end of the week with it still.

Nice and easy two pass shave -- one full pass everywhere and the second just along my jawline. DFS. The splash has light menthol and light alcohol burn followed by great skin conditioning feel and a fairly long-lasting scent.

You need some new material, Charlie. I mean, granted, I can rock a floppy hat and knickers with the best of them, but there’s only so much handsome to go around here. I don’t want the other guys to get jealous.
