September 2018 30 Day Rule/Focus Pix & Discussion

Well, gentlemen, now that I'm off NB18, I'm going to "enable" myself on Sunday. Maggard has a thing going on various days through the end of September, and I'll make a purchase of a Maggard product. 18% off. Maybe 2 purchases, don't know. I'll "do the math" and be set for Sunday. I think I'll go for the Tobacco&Leather A.S.

Another good shave with the GEM Jr. The only complaint I’d have with this razor at all is that I don’t like how it shaves right under my nose (and no, this isn’t a reference to my mini seppeku the other morning). Very smooth results everywhere else though. This soap isn’t quite up to the Stirlings I’ve used this month, but is still a decent product. Finished with the Gentleman...Yup.
I have one SE razor left for the next few days- the Injectomatic, and then I will have rotated through all my SEs for at least 2 shaves each.

Excellent shot Perry! Has Country Club shut down ? I cant seem to find their website anymore ? Same with Folsom & Co, I thought they were making a comeback too but have seem to disappeared.

I have a ‘51 Canadian Ball End that I find a very nice, albeit mild razor as well, Gary. I take it you have the triangled slots ‘prewar’ model as well?
FWIW, While I do bowl lather quite often, I like the lather by taking Fine Soaps right to the face.

Not only does it sound like that brush is a winner, but also that you’ve unintentionally enabled a few other folks on here for one as well.

 

That'd be too bad about Country Club if that's true. The fella from Texas with the cowboy hat and cigar would be a good source for that info. Hodge, right?

yes ,i have a canadian and u.s. triangular prewar,which i have used on occasion. been playing with the flat bottoms lately.the fine soap was great ,but i think that brush is a bit of a hog.not many uses with it yet.been on the cream/croap kick lately. the synth brushes are easy to dial in...gary

Both, Declan was up for his normal night time feedings but on top of that Logan woke up twice during the night crying. And of course wouldn't you know that those events did not take place at the same time.

Nice shave and photo, Jason! I agree that getting under the nose with the GEM razors is a bit challenging. Have to sort of get what you can vertically and then go sideways. It's a little awkward but it can work with some moving around.

Thank you, Andrew! Yes, Country Club for Men ceased making shaving products and the owner Kevin has rebranded the business into a different name. I think he is making bath soaps at the moment. Not sure if he's going to get back into wet shaving products or not. The bottle of Modern Fougere I have is the last one he had. I bought him out of all the aftershaves he had left.

I'm still working out my opinion on what a good badger brush feels like. When folks say they prefer Semogue over Omega knots I assume they like soft bristles. I know I like boar for their stiffness of bristle (backbone?) & enjoy breaking in a new boar brush. Badger has more variation than the boars I've tried. I'm adjusting my thoughts about what a badger "should" feel like. They don't have the backbone (stiffness?) of boar bristle. I think I will prefer very dense short lofted badgers when I get my mind wrapped around the difference. Soft tips is what I get from synthetics. If it's a feature of badgers I'm OK with that. I have an issue with floppiness which is why I haven't tried a horse hair. The formula Jared @PickledNorthern shared states that for a sufficiently dense badger knot;

(Diameter of knot) X 2 = Loft height ( or less loft for more backbone)

This handle Steve @Vlasta put together was designed to be big. The handle is one solid chunk of aluminum that's beautifully machined with a soft luster anodized finish. The knot is dense and the loft isn't too tall. It has the right qualification to be a great brush. My badger lathering technique may be improving because I'm getting better results. Could also be the natural animal oils are getting washed out of the hairs, and /or I'm finally loading sufficient product to do the job. An additional factor; I've bowl lathered 95% of my shaves but I'm trying to face lather.

TLDR; I'm still evaluating & developing technique, but happy so far!
