The fact of the matter is that I used an electric beard trimmer to shave with, because the multibladed cartridges would leave me with ingrown hairs and irritation so bad, I couldn't shave for a week after using one.

To go from that to being able to shave daily, or even twice daily if i want is a real blessing.

My cost before wet shaving was about $30 every three or four years, to replace the trimmer.

My adventure isn't about the money. I have found, without any doubt, the best shaving razor ever is my Gillette 1921-28 Old Type. I highly recommend one. I will use it for the rest of my life. I like trying to buy other nice razors, for as little as possible, which is not an easy feat on eBay. I have discovered that I don't like the heavy handle of a Gillette Bulldog, so I will sell or trade it at some point, rather than restoring it. So, I guess that won't cost me.

If you want to really save money, I really recommend a Palmolive soap stick, it's ridiculously cheap and lasts almost forever! I mean it. Great soap. That's part of the adventure too. Unless you live outside the US, the TSD soaps are outstanding value. I was lucky enough to win a sample in a PIF. I can't justify the postage cost to the UK. And I know what I'm missing now. Gut wrenching!

I don't know about saving money, but I'm thoroughly enjoying my new hobby. I guess you guys are too. Happy shaves.

    I'm in agreement with @PLANofMAN .
I got into vintage shaving because of the massive ingrown hair, and irritation. I had to see specialists for it. That was 2 1/2 years ago, and I am irritation free, and rarely get any ingrown hairs. I have spent a lot collecting razors and accumulating blades during that time. I would gladly spend thousands more to do it all over again, and remain pain free.
    Viva la Vintage Rasoirs.

Of course, this number will only get higher. There are high initial costs, but the savings and comfort far outweigh upfront costs.

I learned to cut my own hair about 25 years ago (when I was a lad), and it has saved me a staggering amount of money.

Well done. The saying goes, "watch your pennies and the dollars take care of themselves".

Not that I'm not spending tons on my passions, mainly my 1969 Triumph 500. In the 10 years I've owned it I'd say I've spent $10K in repairs!!! Not including the $3.6K acquisition cost.

Thanks. She's in rougher shape right now, having suffered a dual bore cylinder block failure, see.

Thankfully we have a spare. You can see how the original had been re-bored too many times by previous owners, causing the failure.

Negative. Rings got caught in cracks, disintergrated and spread metal through engine.

But, not to worry. Engine has now been stripped down, bearings replaced, sludge traps and oil ways cleaned out, new pistons and cylinder installing this weekend.

I did a calculation last year, and al the soap and razors, vintage razors I mean, that I purchased in the second half of the year totaled to less then what I spent on cartridge shaving in an entire year.

We're now 1,982 days (65 months) since I started shaving with my Gillette TTO and DR Harris soap bowl. At four blades a month, that's 260 blades at $0.20 a blade for total razor cost of $52.00. Every six months I need a new soap puck, so ten pucks have cost me $220. So my total shaving cost from May 1st 2013 to Oct 4, 2018 is $272, or $0.13 a day.

I have to think that I'd be over $1,000 over that same period using disposable cartridge blades and aerosol foam.

Congratulations on your cost savings. Your perspective towards shaving is different than mine. Many view shaving as a daily necessity & want to get through it as inexpensively as possible. I was that way 40+ years myself. Now I view at it as a hobby that I enjoy & get pleasure from. I enjoy looking for, finding, & using new razors, soaps, brushes, etc. I view shaving as an activity that gives me pleasure each day. Spending money on a hobby, be it shaving, motorcycles, stereo equipment, or anything else, is what the individual derives pleasure from. That enjoyment is priceless.

I view cooking as a necessity, so I don't need to spend a lot of money on various pots, pans, knives, appliances, & other kitchen utensils. Others may disagree with me, & that's fine. Just using that as an example.

There's a nice razor on BST, I would be happy to help you spend the money you've saved! Just kidding!:)
