Made a decision tonight that some of you "more experienced" wet-shavers than me might grunt over, but I thought it was the right thing. I dumped my WSP Sandalwood soap and aftershave. There wasn't much A.S. left, and something didn't look good about the soap. It was the only one that I have that had lots of hairs and gunk around it. Perhaps that is the result of not having used it much. IMO, both products weren't worth a PIF. I'm in good enough shape in my "den" though.

    Razor: Gillette Old Type
    Blade: Gillette Nacet
    Soap: WSP Barbershop
    Brush: Stirling Kong (face lather)
    After: Alum and Floid Blue

Received my Old Type in the mail today and right on time as I had about 3 days growth to mow down. I figured a Gillette razor should be broken in with a Gillette blade, and Nacets were the only open tuck I had in the medicine cabinet, so crocodile choppers it was. The Kong whipped up a perfectly slick creamy lather, and the Old Type didn't disappoint. Three passes and very little touch up made for a great shave. I missed a spot on my jawline, so I just missed the baby. I had a little warmth from the alum on the right side of the neck where I tend to get a little heavy handed, being a lefty. A splash of the Blue made for a nice finish and I was out the door for a date night dinner then shopping at the mall with my 11 year old daughter who just started fall break from school.

Hmm. Since I was thinking of doing a Pass Around mainly with the 30DC, at least to start, I think I will begin the Lazy Way right here with the following announcement:

I am willing to loan out razors if anyone wants to try something they don’t already have. PM me if interested.

Off the top of my head, I have available: Fatip Grande OC, Gillette Old Type OC, Gillette NEW Long Comb OC, Gillette Aristocrat, English Aristocrat Jr, English Rocket, SuperSpeed, Red Tip, Blue Tip, Pre-War triangle slot fathandled Tech, later Techs. Also Schick G, Schick HydroMagic, Schick M Adjustable and Pal Adjustable injectors. Also Rockwell 6s DE and Supply Co V.2 Single Edge injector. Oh yeah, and a Probak OC with Gillette handles.

A couple of us are currently involved in a pass-around over on another forum. That one is using the model of leave-a-razor/take-a-razor so the contents change after each stop.

Razor - Gillette NEW LC (Delta Echo)
    Blade - ladas-super-stainless.jpg (1)
Soap - Oleo Soapworks El Caballero
    Brush - Jayaruh #54
    Post - Alum

A long and eventful day. I spent nearly 12 hours doing deliveries today with my wife along for the ride. So it was actually kind of fun. We had lunch at a Chinese buffet that we love but haven't been too recently. Kind of a date in the middle of a workday. Better than the food I delivered all day. Well, with the exception of the one rib delivery.

Shave tonight - the NEW LC, Delta Echo version, is up next in line partly because so many of you started out with your Gillette News. A little NEW envy going around here. This razor was a prize won in a raffle here at TSD and I have always loved it. The New razors are just outstanding vintage shavers anyway. I have another LC still in its original gold so having this one in modern finish is a real bonus. El Caballero for the soap with the JR54 for a great lather. The Ladas blade was smooth and sharp. Gotta love Russian Steel! All in all a great shave and nice finish to the day.

The only other item in the day was a phone call from my sister that I have been expecting for some time. My mother, who twice survived Breast Cancer, who nearly died form diverticulitis after trying to power through her own treatments for it, and who has broken her hip, shoulder, outlived three husbands and basically seemed like she'd outlive the rest of us as well, passed away today. She had caught pneumonia last week and they also discovered congestive heart failure. She was 88 years old and one of the most loving and caring people the world ever knew. For the sake of transparency, my views on death are not the usual. I'm not upset nor am I feeling any great loss. I feel joy for her that she finally reached the finish line she spent her whole life striving for. And I know, as she taught my siblings and I when my Dad died many years ago when I was still young, the sun comes up every morning no matter who is here to see it. If we are one of the lucky ones to see it again - then LIVE. So, I plan to get up tomorrow and every day that I can and LIVE that day like no other. That's the greatest tribute I can think that she would like.

    Have a wonderful Friday gentlemen!

Neal, your mother sounded like a truly wonderful person and a real warrior. It saddens me to hear of her passing, but your outlook heartens me - it is indeed the most fitting tribute to live in way that is congruent to her, and to celebrate and cherish the incredible life that she led. You, and your family, will be in my thoughts and prayers.

Neal, my condolences on your loss. Even when death is expected, the one who is now gone is stll missed. But I respect your intention to honour your mother by following her teachings and know that she will be equally proud of you when you reach your own finish line and see her again. In the meantime, I hope you are not offended if I pray tonight for her peace and for the comfort of her surviving family and friends.
