That is a great video. I know Micah, his kids go to the same school as our kids. He is a great guy and very fun to see in person.

@BaylorGator , Randy, just keep using it and hopefully, it will open up enough for your tastes. When breaking mine in I try to try them by brushing them against my wood tub or against a towl.

Add me to the Tabac fan club, I love the scent and the soap. I use the EDC in addition to the soap. :happy088:

Last night I needed a 'social shave' for an evening appointment. The Joris delivered and had a smooth mug for the evening.
    Irritation A+ Closeness A+

    Razor:Joris vintage Wilkinson Sword blade
    Brush: 30DC LE
    Soap: Crowne and Crane tallow
    AS: Speick AS
Scent: Sege Lutens Musc Koublaï Khän

I needed to shave for work in the morning. Since this was the 3rd shave in 24 hours I skipped the fourth pass, against the grain. That was the reason for the A- on closeness.

    Irritation A+ Closeness A- Smoothness A+ Sharpness A

    Razor: George Wostenholm
    Strop: Kanayama
    Brush: Elite Razor Manchurian
    Pre: Nivea
    Soap: MdC
    AS: Speick AS, L’Occitane ASB
    Scent: Frederic Malle Musc Ravageur

And the big news, I finally finished the MdC. I think I bought it 3 years ago.

Great photo today, Jason! I like the way you have the razor balanced on top of the soap tub rim and silhouetted against the background. Very artistic! My recollection of the Jeeves Cherry Blossom description is that it contains the scent of cherry blossoms and magnolias plus pomegranate seeds and currants. So it might well be partially reminiscent of the B&M Latha Sandalwood that had a heavy dose of currant mixed in.

Great reports and photos, Keith! I think the Wostenholm is a very handsome razor and your photo displays it to great advantage. But the truly special picture today is the historic photo of an emptied MdC jar. That might very well be the first one ever to be photographed...

That's a magnificent setup, Randy. Both organizes and displays your collection. Most impressive! My stuff is all stuffed in cardboard boxes and cartons stashed here and there throughout the house...

Congrats on finishing off the MdC, Keith! I guess the big question is, would you purchase it again?

    Razor - Gillette NEW LC
    Blade - [IMG] (2)
    Soap - Tabac
Brush - Stirling Pro Type Synthetic
    Post - Alum

Two day growth today due to my late arrival home last night after an 11 hour road trip. I return to work in the morning so it's time to look like a human again. New LC and Sharp Star still up and I was inspired by @Primotenore to pull out the Tabac as my "odds and ends" soap. Tabac is one of the two favorite classics I always have on hand. I don't care what anyone (this means you @wristwatchb ) says - I don't think the scent is an "old man scent". And it's one of my wife's favorites so even if I didn't like it (which I do) it would be a keeper.

Three full passes with some very cushy and slick lather and the baby is in the house. My bag is unpacked, desk semi-clean after a bit of effort today, and all is well.

Thank you John, The scales really add something extra to the razor for me.

That is tough questions, Once I have brought my stock of soaps to something approaching normal I plan to keep the soaps in the in my den to a reasonable amount. The performance is very good and like the Fougere scent allot. I have a tub of the original scent that has very little use so it will be a while before I have to make the decision to rebuy but at this point I do not think I will buy it again.

Gillette Big Boy (Old Type) / Astra SP (2)
    Simpsons CH2 Chubby Synthetic Bristle
    Stirling Coniferous soap sample
Alum and Stirling Coniferous splash sample

Gillette Old Type Big Boy and Richwood New Improved.JPG

I switched soaps today to try a sample of Stirling Coniferous soap generously sent to me by Jason @jtspartan. I picked up a sample of the matching splash at Canadian Beard and Blade Co. The soap exhibited the usual Stirling characteristics of easy lathering and great slickness. I found the pine scent of both the soap and splash quite pleasant.

Today's razor is probably the nicest of my vintage cased or boxed DEs. It's a Gillette Big Boy in its original wooden case with a matching blade bank. The razor dates to 1921 and, apart from a few speckles of plating loss on the top cap, it appears to be in perfect condition, as is the wooden box. I can easily imagine the original owner being given this razor as a gift (the advertisements suggested they were great Christmas gifts, etc.), thanking the giver profusely, and then carefully putting it away to be used on "special occasions" while he continued to shave with the Khaki Service Set that he was issued three years earlier by his loving Uncle Sam...

The Big Boy is indeed a big boy. A standard Ball End handle for an Old Type razor is three inches long, as is the Single Ring handle. The Big Boy's handle is 3/4" longer and approximately twice the diameter with a weight to match. It's a very hefty razor. However, once I figured out how best to hold the razor to balance the length and weight of the handle, the shave was very smooth. In fact, I think it is the mildest of all the Old Types I have tried -- about on a par with the NEWs. Two passes left me with an almost dolphin smooth BBS. The alum was a bit warm in places but not at all bad; the water rinse cooled it off again and the alcohol splash hardly burned at all.

The other razor in the photo is my other nicely cased razor: a New Improved dated 1925 in a Richwood model wooden box. The razor is tarnished silver plate but is otherwise in good condition, and the wooden box is in great shape apart from a few surface scratches on the lid. I will use that razor tomorrow.
