I love those old survivor razors.

 

Got a good 3 shaves in this week with the SR.... sadly will be taking tonight off to give my face a rest and heal a bit. I am really enjoying using the SR and realized I am making a ton of mistakes (Alum block makes it very clear afterwards).
1. Used too much water and not enough soap to make a good lather (also need to use a bowl instead of a mug -.-)
2. Need to remember to make angle or direction adjustments with the blade off my face (got nicked a few times from that)
3. My wife was pretty concerned after the first day trying and my face was red like I was sun burnt -.- (believe the issue was trying to make too many passes and poor lather)
4. Having the hardest time getting a good shave on my chin... keeping the correct angle while the face curves is hard

In the end my shave yesterday I got my sides super smooth but around the mouth is okay but likely not doing it right and the transitions -.-
Anyways you guys have been very encouraging and I am having fun here (my face might not agree )

 

Thanks Adam. This one was pretty well taken care of throughout its 160+ years, i had thought about having it restored but decided the etch was too nice to loose. I just make sure to give it a coat of oil after I use it.

 

Good to hear you are enjoying your progress. Sr shaving does take a wetter lather than a de or se, make sure your getting good facial prep and skin stretching. If there’s irritation try using less pressure and lessen the angle of the blade. (Shave the lather not the skin) As for the chin maybe try changing the direction you start your pass from for that spot. Or also try short buffing strokes. The chin, jawline, and neck are the hardest areas to master but with time and practice you will become good at this. Good luck and remember to ask questions we are more than happy to help.
And mrs76 was quite concerned when I had first started too. I used to have her feel my face to rate my progress. Thinking back on it I’m sure she was probably ready to have me committed, She still may since she thinks we are all nuts posting pics of our shaves here.

 

Are you being serious? How the bloody hell do you get that many shaves from a blade? Is this about pressure and angle, or is your beard made of cotton wool?

I wouldn't worry about trying for too smooth a shave just yet. That will often lead to over shaving and irritation. As you get better, the shaves will naturally improve.

Prep: Cold water and Stirling mentholated pre-shave soap
Blade: vintage Gillette Platinum Plus
Razor: Schick J1 injector
Brush: Omega 10049 boar
Soap: Mitchell's Wool Fat
Post: Witch hazel, Fine American Blend aftershave

Fine shave this morning. I spent more time loading the brush than usual and was rewarded with terrific lather. The Fat will build up and spill over the edge as you're loading, and I let some of that fall out into the sink and then scooped up the rest into the brush when I was done loading. Easy face lathering and wonderful lather quality. Did a few more strokes than normal, including some ATG, and came away nice and smooth and clean. Wonderful Friday shave.

Good morning!

Wonderful shave to start the day! Two pass with touch up, near BBS.
The Dart gives a close shave with little effort and attention to technique. I have a patch of whiskers on my right jaw that usually takes extra buffing to get smooth, most days I don't bother. The Dart knocked them down in my first two passes. I don't feel like I could do a rushed shave with it, not yet anyway. Maybe after a focus.

Just thought of an idea-while I only have 1 Rise Super Foam left(well, plus the one I'm working on now), I have about 3 or 4 of the "Cooling Balms" left. I'm going to try a Rise balm to follow the Local Gent Tobacco Lounge soap sometime...see if that "cools" down any potential burn from the soap.

2nd day with the NI. Got the usual great Stirling lather and had 3 nice passes. Not a super smooth shaver, but fairly efficient and definitely fun to use.
John @Screwtape sent me a few other goodies with this razor. Amongst them was this splash sample. I get much more cedar than in the older matching soap. Makes me feel like I just finished chainsawing something.
