Oh we don't break out the nice stuff until Decadent December! Seriously, yeah, there's some quality gear around here but some of the best shaves I've had were with the basics. Technique makes even "normal" gear outstanding!

NOVember is NO whatever you want it to be! Apparently.

    November 1

    Razor - 1946/47 Gillette Aristocrat
    Blade - voskhod-teflon-coated.jpg
    Soap - Tabac
    Brush - Semogue 620
    Post - Alum

Welcome to NOVember! I absolutely love all the directions you all have taken the "NO" this month. No Variation, No Repeat, No Plan, NO whatever. It's great. For myself it's a No Repeat November. I chose 30 razors (I do have more which is a bit of a shock), 30 soaps (yes I have a few more as well but not as many as razors) and enough of each kind of blade to match up with razors. (I have plenty more blades but that should surprise nobody). I have 15 brushes (another mild shock) so I will repeat each brush but only once. My plan to determine each day's shave - FATE!! I took a list of my razors and ran them through random.com today. The top one was the choice for tonight. That one is now off the list for the rest of the month. Same for soaps. Each time a blade gets selected it gets only that one shave as well. The brush will remain in play until its second use, then be taken off the list. I'll randomize each day.

I found it interesting with a few Aristocrats showing up earlier that the randomizer would choose my Aristocrat as well. Fate? Tabac for a classic match of a soap. The Semogue 620 boar got the call for its first showing this month. And the blade? First up from the randomizer was the mighty Voskhod! Pretty solid setup based on the randomness of the universe. Or at least random.org.

Fine lather from the Tabac. Still one of my favorite soaps and the small boar does a very fine job. It's well broken in so quite soft yet nice backbone and scritch as well. Finish was BBS and the alum was quiet. Great start to the month!

Speaking of great starts to the month - nearly 10 pages already? I like it! We'll give away that Stirling gift card earlier in the month than I thought if it keeps up like this! Have a great evening.

Come on, man. I’m kinda weak willed about this stuff.

Where can I get more information on the LE scents?

So the October themread got closed before I could add some comments, so here we go:
    1) OCtober was fun. I have more OCs than I thought, with both DEs and SEs. After three months of safety razor focus, I kind of miss my straights though.
    2) Thanks to everyone who shared thier Halloween with us. Enjoyed the stories and pictures. The haunted razor seems pretty happy.
    3) Joseph @Primotenore, about 8 years ago, my wife and I had an awesome crop of chili peppers. We decided to dry some of them in the oven while out on the deck. We couldn’t go back inside for hours. Also learned that year not to grind the dried peppers in the house, and not to ever try and use that grinder for coffee again. Did find a great way to dry them, on the smoker. Adds a good flavor, and keeps the fumes outside. Also an excuse to bbq.
    4) for November, I will do an unfocused focus. Going through my favorite razors before I start EDRIO next year. I will continue to use one soap every other shave until it is gone.

Just out of curiosity, do Gillette Slims shave the same as Fatboys? Is the head geometry the same?

  12. Norcalnewb

The Slims have a different head geometry. As the name implies, the head is slimmer than the Fatboy. The balance is also different due to the length of the handle. I personally prefer the Fatboy, but I know some people like the Slim better, so it is a YMMV.

Ahhh, I thought that the difference in name was down to the handle size! Thank you for the information :)
I certainly won't be purchasing a Fatboy to try any time soon!

Prep: Cold water and Stirling mentholated pre-shave soap
    Blade: GEM
    Razor: Superior Lather Catcher
    Brush: Omega 10049 boar
    Soap: Mitchell's Wool Fat
Post: Witch hazel, Fine American Blend aftershave

Wonderful Fat Friday shave this morning. The Lather Catcher was smooth and comfortable, the Fat lather was luscious, and the finish from the American Blend was spot on. Terrific experience and results.

    Enjoy your day!

I'm having another rushed morning but at least the shave was drama free. The R4L was easy to lather with a wonderful scent. Three passes and touch ups ended in a near perfect shave. A splash of the matching aftershave and I am ready for the morning commute. I hope everyone has a great Saturday.

Apparently the randomizer likes you. Oh, except for Tabac. Good shave, bad “old man” smell.

@Screwtape nailed it. I would add, though, that they shave very similarly. I used to prefer the Slim. Now I prefer the Fatboy. However the differences are pretty minimal.
