I guess I will figure out the remaining Fridays when I get to them. For razors, maybe Fathandled Techs?

Up very early this morning. With a mid morning post. A great drama free shave to start the day. Two passes and touch ups just missed the baby. The spot on my lower right neck has allowed the little guy to escape all week. Back to work now. I hope everyone has a great Friday.

I agree that many, probably a majority, of those who switch to traditional shaving are not quite as "involved" as those of us here. But that's ok. There are two benefits of the change that can be promoted to anyone. Cost savings (no, really, hear me out) and environmental benefits. Most of us will admit we first got interested as a way of saving money. Then quickly invested our life savings in a thousand razors, a roomful of soaps and so many brushes that badgers are suddenly endangered. (No they're not but you get my point). So any hope of saving money went out the window. However, if you switch to a safety razor or straight and get a good setup and then only buy the necessities such as a replacement soap when you need it, blades, etc., you can actually save a lot of money. You just have to avoid the temptation to collect as you go and for many that probably isn't a problem. Do they enjoy themselves as much as those who treat it as a hobby? Probably not, and yes it remains a mundane part of the day when they shave. But - it's cheaper so they will continue. As for the environmental benefits - instead of a mountain of plastic disposable razors and pressurized goo cans at the end of the year, there is a minimal amount of mostly recyclable waste from soap boxes and tubs, and none of the plastic from cheap razor handles. Individually not a huge benefit to the environment but it is a benefit. And enough small players equals a big player. Again, it's a daily task but at least there is a payoff.

I suspect that you are correct that many try the right way then return to the carts and disposables out of habit. I would hope, though, that many more would continue to shave with the "old stuff" just because of the above two benefits.

Another hotel shave today. Kept the No Repeat November going with this Razorock soap and the Booster AS. A very nice shave. Probably the best lather I’ve gotten from this soap, even with this small travel brush. I wonder if it is because of the soft water here on the coast. 3 full passes and I’m completely smooth. Off to meetings again, and then a late evening flight back home.
    Have a great day all!

Thank you, Andrew. It is based on Boellis Panama 1924. I have no idea if it is an accurate dupe as I don’t have the original.

November 9, 2018- NOthing But Techs

    Razor: Post-War British Aluminium Tech
    Blade: 7 o'Clock Permasharp Stainless (4)
    Brush: Razorock Plissoft 22
    Soap: Stirling Sheep
    Post: Alum, Listerine, WH

Today brings us to one of two Tech shaves that I have been somewhat dreading, the Post-War British Aluminium Tech. This razor was part of a generous PIF from @Morman Bridge. It was my first English Gillette but has always been a bit of a challenge for me. I'm not sure if it is clear from these photos, but when compared to a US post-war Tech it has a narrower baseplate which, I think, puts a different curve on the blade.

    IMG_0282.jpg
It is also an incredibly light razor. It seems like it is even lighter than the Sterling Tech.

Today's shave was a repetition of all the mantras: go slow, no pressure, ride the cap. The result was the best and most comfortable shave that I've gotten from this razor. As I shaved, I definitely could feel the blade and I think I can see where my previous issues came from. This will probably never be a favorite razor (though some of you would probably love it) but I'm glade to be getting a handle on it.

I'll probably not be shaving tomorrow, so the next one will be on Veteran's/Remembrance Day with the Canadian Pre-War Tech. Next week should run something like this:
    • Pre-War Canadian Tech (Khaki Set)
    • US Contract Tech (transitional baseplate)
    • US Pre-War Tech
    • British 4-piece Flat-Bottom Tech
    • US Bakelite Tech
If I don't end up skipping a day in there, then I'll end up the week with the first non-Gillette of the month- a Clix Bakelite razor (from a military set) or a similar Star Bakelite razor.

Great shave Brian! You grandson looks like he had a much better time at first haircut then Logan did.

So I spent a couple hours honing this bad boy. Why a couple hours you ask? Well, I bought it used before I discovered that it had really significant (and really wonky) hone wear. As a result, not only was it unnecessarily hard to hone, but the uneven, wavy hone wear really detracted from its looks. Part way in I realized that it was such a problem and looked so bad that I had nothing to lose, so I decided to do what I would normally never consider. I taped the edge and ground down the spine on the stones so that the hone wear became relatively even. Then I sanded down the spine and blade to remove the evidence of hone wear, and left it with a matte finish. Finally I taped it and honed it like normal. Lots of work, but it no longer looks like someone butchered the spine, and the end result looks much better than how it started.
