Thank you, Bruce! I haven't come as far as you with my shavette. I can't get the quality of shave that I can get with a safety razor. Mostly due to lack of confidence. I'm sure it will come with continued use.

Ahh the Assured dollar store TTO, this isn't your average SuperSpeed clone. Lots of blade reveal, decent gap, and positive blade exposure. The only down side is that its light and the sheet metal it is stamped out of is quite thin (though not as bad as the Nanjie TTO). The Vi-John had no problem pulling off a BBS on its second shave. Both Sandpiper and Noir are amazing scents and they work well together. I bought two of the Assured razors from the Dollar Tree a few months ago and if anyone is interested in trying one keep your eyes open for a PIF that I will be posting in a few days.

I'll share my impressions, and hope others add to the information.

My (huge) sample of Stirling Port au Prince scent by Stirling give a creamy slick lather. It's subtle but different that beef tallow based soaps. That's the performance angle.

Scent is an issue with sheep tallow - it has one. I've only got a couple lathers from one other mutton based soap - Mitchell's - thanks to a Soap Pass Around couple years ago. I don't recall the scent of The Fat but seems like it was acceptable. To cover what might be offensive to some a strong load of scent oils can be the fix. If you are OK with the scent of lanolin it's worth a try.

 

Actually, you have. You're just smarter than me.
I can get just about the same quality of shave from the shavette as I can with a DE razor. And, you will get there soon. And, yes - confidence does play a big part of it. I noticed that when I stopped fearing the razor (but still showed it respect), and started listening to what it was telling me, the shaves improved greatly. I still watch what I'm doing, but I go more by the feel of the blade to get the angle necessary. But, like today, I still make some dumb, rookie mistakes.

 

Day 14.

Two passes with the straight, then I let the micromatic have the last word. Left hand got equal time again today. I did have one close call where I started to set down toe-first (with the right hand. Go figure.). If I'd been using a Stirling glacial soap, that would have bled a bunch. But I felt it coming and reacted, so just a tiny bit of blood. Otherwise, probably the best I've done as far as the quality of the shave. Could have stopped if I was only going for presentable appearance.

Thanks Andrew, I'll pay close attention to its quality from here on out. Seems to be fine thus far, but we'll see what happens as I get closer to the clay.

 

That Clubman train smoke comes from everyone smoking celebratory cigars in honor of the greatness of the original and Special Reserve. I own the train, but I'm not on it, as I don't smoke. .

 

Beef, buffalo, duck, sheep are just some sources of fat that are used in the production of lye based soaps. Even Tyler Durden used an animal fat for his Paper Street Soap. Considering the source of his supplies it might be THE best for human faces and also slightly disgusting if you knew where he got it.

There's a discussion about the subject HERE that led me to do some off site reading. The animal sourced tallow used to make soap doesn't vary much from plant based fats. Subtle differences in the mix of fatty acids give different properties to the finished product.

That's what it comes down to - subtle differences like post shave face feel, or glide and lather quality.

I already have the aftershave, and have used it for a few shaves, but I wanted to save as much as I could for the matching soap-part of the 2019 Tony champion set.

 

Really good stuff. It will not go to waste.
